tyoftheirmovements.Performersalsoadheretoavarietyofstylisticconventionsthathelpaudiencesnavigatetheplotoftheproduction.Thelayersofmeaningwithineachmovementmustbeexpressedintimewithmusic.BeijingoperaarebasedonChinesehistory,folklore,and,increasingly,contemporarylife.,Beijingoperawasinitiallyanexclusivelymalepursuit.TheQianlongEmperorhadbannedallfemaleperformersinBeijingin1772.Theappearanceofwomenonthestagebeganunofficiallyduringthe1870s.Femaleperformersbegantoimpersonatemalerolesanddeclaredequalitywithmen.By1894,thefirstcommercialvenueshowcasingfemaleperformancetroupesappearedinShanghai.Thisencouragedotherfemaletroupestoform,whichgraduallyincreasedinpopularity.Asaresult,theatreartistYuZhenting俞振庭petitioned(请愿)fortheliftingofthebanaf
