However,Hawking’slifewasthreatenedbyaterribledisease.Hehadneverbeenverywellcoordinatedphysicallyasachild,andinhisthirdyearatOxford,henoticedthatheseemedtobegettingclumsier.Shortlyafterhis21stbirthday,hewentintohospitalfortests.ItwasagreatshocktoHawkingtodiscoverthathehadLouGehrig’sdisease(adiseasethataffectsmusclecontrol).Therealizationthathehadanincurablediseaseandthathehadtospendhisrestlifeinthewheelchairwaslikelytokillhiminthefirstfewyears.

ThedoctorssuggestedHawkinggobacktoCambridgeandcarryonwiththeresearchhehadjuststartedingeneralrelativityandcosmology.Shortlyafterhecameoutofhospital,hesuddenlyrealizedthattherewerealotofworthwhilethingshecoulddo.Hawkingthenbegantomakeprogresswithhisresearch.
