Asanoldsayinggoes,“therearethreeimportantthingswhenyouintheoutside,whichareeating,wearingandliving.”Justaswecansee,“eating”isinthefirstplace,eatingisreallyimportantineverydaylifeinChina.Anddietisalsoakindofculture.Andwhenwemeetothersbychance,weoftentalkaboutdiet.Andthemostremarkabledifferenceisthefoodculturewhenwecomparedwithtwocountries’differences.JustasXuXiongpointingoutthat,thereasonswhichcausedthedifferentfoodcultureinChinaandAmericaarethedifferentculture,customs,history,atmosphere,nutritionvaluesandeconomicconditionandsoon.AndthepeoplenowthinksuperficiallythatthelargestdifferenceisthatmostofChinesepeopleeatsomethingusingchopsticks,whileinAmericatheyuseknifeandfork.Infact,therearemanydeepdifferentlevelswhichareusuallyneglected,forexample,thedietattitudes,thedietmanners,thedietenvironmentandanyotherthings.NowIwillmakesomeexplanationsaboutthedifferentfoodcultureinChinaandAmerica.

1、DifferentDietAttitudes

InChina,wewilleatsomethingwithsensibility.Whenwechoosewhattoeat,wewillcaremoreaboutthecolor,thesmell,thetaste,theshapeandthedevice.Becauseournationsinthepastmanyyears,theproductivelevelisverylow,andmanypeoplearealwayshungry,theycan’teatenoughfood.Soifakindofculturetreatseatingasthemostimportantthing,therewillappeartwosituations.Ononehand,thisfunctionofeatingwillbeplayedtomaximize,notonlyforsurviving,butalsoforusingittomaintainhealth,whichistheculturalbasisof“ifyouwanttokeephealth,you’dbetterchoosetoenjoysomedeliciousfoodratherthantakemedicines”.Ontheotherhand,ifpayingtoomuchattentiononfood,itwillmakepeopleoftenpursuitthedeliciousfood.

WhileAmericansmaybemorerationality.Whentheyeatsomething,thethingstheycaremostarethenutritiousvalue,suchastheprotein,thefat,thevitamin,themineralsandthecarbohydrate.Andthisattitudeonfoodisconnectedwiththewholewesternphilosophy.Metaphysicsisthemainfeatureofwesternphilosophy.Theobjectofstudyofwesternphilosophyisthereasonsofthings.Andthiskindofphilosophyhasbroughtvitalitytowesternculture,whichleadstotherapiddevelopmentonsciences,psychologyandmethodology.Butinotheraspects,thisphilosophyadvocatesplayahinderrole,suchasfoodculture.Inthebanquet,theyalsopayattentiontotableware,tomaterialsandtoservice,butnomatterhowluxury,fromLosAngelestoNewYork,thesteakisonlyonetaste,whichhasnoartstospeakof.Asadish,chickenischicken,steakissteak,evenwithothermatches,therewillbehappenedintheplate,forexamplea“Frenchlampchops”,thepotatoeswillbeontheleftsidenexttothelampchops,whiletherightsidewillplaceboiledgreenbeansandafewslicesoftomatoes.Itwillformstrongcontrastonthecolor,whilethetastesaboutallkindsofmaterialsareunrelatedtoeachother.

2、DifferentFoodObjects

InAmerica,theythinkthefoodsareusedjusttoeat,sotheyofteneatalargepieceofmeat,thewholechickenandother“hardfood”.HoweverinChina,weeatsomethingismainlyenjoyingthetasteofit.SotheChinesecookingalsoshowgreatrandomnessontheselectedmaterials.AndmanythingswhichareabandonedbythewesternerswillbetreatedasexcellentmaterialsinChina.ThethingswhichforeignchefscannothandlecanachievesomethingmagicwhentheyareinChinesechefs’hands.

Accordingtoasurveyofwesternbotanists,Chinesefoodhasmorethan600kindsofvegetables,whichissixtimesmorethanitinthewest.Infact,inChinesedishes,thevegetablesisakindofcommonfood,andmeatdishesonlyonholidaysandfestivalsorwithhigherlivingstandardwillappearinthenormaldiet,sofromancienttimes,thereisanoldsaying“freshvegetables”,whichmeanseatingvegetables,havingamaineffectonnormaldiet.Chinesepeopleuseplantsasmaincourses,whichhasclosestcontactwithBuddhists.Theytreatanimalsas“beings”,whiletreatingplantsas“nosouls”.Therefore,theyadvocatevegetarianism.

However,whentheAmericansintroducethecharacteristicsoftheirowncountry’sfood,theythinktheycaremoreaboutthenutritionthantheChinese.AndinAmerica,ithasmanydevelopedfoodindustries,suchascannedfood,fastfood,etc.Althoughthesekindsoffoodhavethesametaste,theycansavetimeandincludegoodnutrition.Therefore,thepeople’sbodyintheircountryisstrongerthantheChinesepeople.Theyaretallwithlonglegs,broadshouldersandwell-developedmuscles.AccordingtothedifferentfoodobjectsbetweenChinaandAmerica,somebodycalledtheChineseplantcharacter,whiletheAmericansanimalcharacter.

3、DifferentWaysofEating

Thereisalargedifferenceinthewaysofeating,whichhasanimpactonthenationalcharacter.InChina,abanquet,nomatterwhatpurpose,therewillbeonlyoneform,whichiseveryonesittinginacircle,sharingonetable.Andthiskindofbanquetshoulduseroundtable,whichcancreateaatmosphereofunite,courtesyandfun.Thedeliciousfoodputonthetable’scenter,itisnotonlytheobjectoftaste,butalsoisakindofmediumtoexchangefeelings.Peopletoasttoeachotherandtakefoodtoothers,whichreflectthemutualrespectbetweenpeopleandthevirtueofcourtesy.Althoughfromthehealthypointofview,thiswayofdiethasobviousshortcomings,itisconsistentwithournation’smentalityofreunion,reflectingtheclassicalChinesephilosophyof“harmony”,whichismoreconvenienttoexchangeeachother’semotions.Thusitisverydifficulttoreform.

Whileinthewestern-stylebanquets,althoughthefoodandwineareveryimportant,theystilltreatedasfoils.Friendshipisthecoreofthebanquet.Andtheyreachthispurposethroughcommunicatingwiththeguestswhoarenextto.

Ifcomparedthefriendshipofabanquetwithdance,itcanbesaidthat,Chinesebanquetislikeadancetogether,whilewestern-stylebanquetlikeadanceofmenandwomen.Fromit,wecanseethatthepurposeofbanquet’sfriendshipisveryobviousinbothChineseandAmericanbanquets.Thedifferenceisthat,Chinesebanquetreflectstheallseatsoffriendship,whilewestern-styledinnerreflectsthefriendshipbetweentheneighboringguests.

Themostobviousdifferenceaboutthewaysofeatingisbuffet.Thismethodisthatallthefoodislistedonthetable.Everyonecantakewhattheyneed,notfixedtotheseat,andmovefreelytogetwhattheywantto.Thiswayprovidesaconvenientchanneltoexchangeemotionsbetweenindividuals.Andtheydon’thavetomakeallthewordstheysaidknownbyallpeople.Italsoshowsthewesterners’pursueofpersonalityandself-respect.However,tosomeextent,eatingbyoneselfandnodisturbtoothers,willseemlackakindofsentimentaboutcelebratingtogetherandbeinghappytogether.

Conclusion:

Inaword,thedifferentfoodculturebetweenChinaandAmericaisabouttheattitudes,whichinchinaisemotionalandinAmericaisrational.However,thisdifferenceseemstobeingchangedwiththedevelopmentofscienceandbecomingfuzzy.MoreandmoreChinesepeopledon’tonlyfocusonthefood’scolor,smellandtasteanylonger.Theyalsomakemoreemphasisonfood’shealthandnutrition.What’smore,astothebusierwork,theythinkcookChinesefoodistoobothered.Itisratherconvenienttohaveahamburgerinstead.Therefore,thedifferenceonthedietisnotclearnow.
