BorninLondonin1889,ChaplinfirstvisitedAmericawithatheatercompanyin1907.Appearingas“Billy”intheplay“SherlockHolmes”,theyoungChaplintraveledaroundthecountrytwice.Onhissecondtrip,hemetMackSennettandwassignedtoKeystoneStudiostoactinfilms.In1914Chaplinmadehisfirstfilm,“MakingaLiving”.Thatsameyearhemadethirty-fourmoreshortfilms,including“CaughtinaCabaret”,“CaughtintheRain”,“TheFaceontheBar-RoomFloor”,and“HisTrystingPlace”.Theseearlysilentshortsallowedverylittletimeforanythingbutphysicalcomedy,andChaplinwasamasteratit.
