   TheresearchwasledbyRyanBuell,anexpertinservicemanagement.Helookedintoconsumerqueuingbehaviorafterworkingwitheconomistsonwhatisknownas“last-placeaversion,”thediscomfortpeoplefeelwhentheyknowtheyearnlessthanothersorconsiderthemselvesatthebottomofthesocialpileforsomeotherreason.Asaresultofthisaversiontobeingthelast,whenapersonfindshimselfattheendofaqueue,hecanmakedecisionsthathewilllaterregret.

   Buellbeganbyobservingpeopleatamulti-checkoutgrocerystoreandthensetupanonlinesurvey.Peoplewhotookpartinthesurveyweretolditwouldtakeaboutfiveminutes.Inreality,ittookonlyoneminute,butwhenparticipantsloggedinforthesurvey,theywereforcedtowaitinavirtualqueuedisplayedonthescreen.Theystartedatthebackandcouldwait,switchtoasecondqueueorchoosetoleave.

   ②__________Onaverage,however,thosewhoswitchedwaited10percentlongerthaniftheyhadstayedput.Thosewhoswitchedtwiceendedupwaiting67percentlongerthaniftheyhadnevermoved.
