Allthesequestionsareremainedinjuniorandseniorcollegestudents’mindsiftheyplantostudyabroadaftergraduates.InChina,graduatesusuallyhavethreechoices:

passingthepostgraduatequalifyingexaminationtogetfurtherstudyinmainlandofChina,findingjobsorstudyingabroad(includesthespecialadministrativeregions).AsHongKong’seconomyandemploymentsystemhavesteadilydevelopedandimprovedinrecentyears,addingthatthelocalgovernmenthascreatedpoliciestoencouragetalentedpeoplestudyingandworkingthere,ChinesemainlandcollegegraduateshaveshownincreasingpreferenceforHongKonguniversities.ThisarticlefocusesonthegraduatesfrommainlandofChinaandaimsatfindingoutdeepreasonsforgraduatespursuingfurtherstudyinHongKongandleadingstudentstomakeproperchoiceswhentheyapplyfortheuniversitiesinHongKong.Inaddition,basingonthecurrentproblems,thisarticlealsopromotessomesuggestionsforHongKonguniversities.

ReasonsforPursuingPostgraduateStudyinHongKong

ComparingwithotherdestinationssuchastheUnitedKingdom,theUnitedStatesandAustralia,whattheadvantagesdoHongKonguniversitieshave?

First,HongKongisaregionalhubforacademicendeavors.HongKongishometoeightgovernment-fundeduniversitiesofferingdozensofmajorareasofstudy.Accordingtothe2012QSWorldUniversityRankings,therearesixHongKonguniversitiesinthelistofthetop300universitiesintheworld,andfourofthemareinthetop100.TheperformanceintherankingsisaclearsighofHongKong’sstrengthinhighereducation.Besides,anumberofscholarshipsareavailabletoassistnon-localstudentstofinancetheireducationinHongKong,andtheawardsareopentoallnon-localstudentsonacompetitivebasis.

Second,HongKonggovernmenthasmadespecialprovisioninitsimmigrationordinance,grantingoneyearextensiontomainlandstudentsaftergraduation,withthepurposeofattractingtalenttotheregion.Thus,oncemainlandstudentsgraduatefromHongKonguniversities,theyhaveoneyeartofindjobsandworkthere.Thegovernmenthasalsosimplifiedtheapplicationprocessforworkingvisasformainlandgraduates.SurveysamonguniversitiesinHongKongrevealthatmorethanhalfofgraduatingmainlandstudentsstayedinHongKongtoworkinthepastthreeyears.

Third,thecostofstudyinginHongKongismuchlessthanthecostinEuropeancountriesorNorthAmerica.Tuitionvariesfromcoursetocourse,butitcanbegenerallyexpectedbetween70,000yuanand120,000yuanperyear.Forthosefamilieswhoconsiderthatfundingisaseriousissue,thecostofeducationinHongKongwillbeapotentialinvestmentthatcanbeprofitableoverlongyears.

TwomaintypesofpostgraduateprogrammesinHongKong

ResearchPostgraduateProgrammeandTaughtPostgraduateProgrammearethetwomaintypesofpostgraduateprogrammesinHongKong.It’snotpropertosaywhichoneisbetterthantheotheronefortheyhavedistinctlydifferentteachinggoals.ResearchPostgraduateProgrammemainlyfocusesonresearchworkandisapreparationfordoctoralstudies.Thiskindofprogrammeprovidesstudentswithtraininginresearchmethodologiesinaspecificdisciplineandstudentsaresubstantiallyinvolvedinresearchproject.Hence,itrequiresapplicantshaveagoodacademicbackgroundandpreferablysoundresearchexperience.Incontrast,TaughtPostgraduateProgrammemainlyfocusesonpracticalcourseworkandisapreparationforcareer.Accordingly,itprovidesstudentswithopportunitiestolearnvocationalskillsandbecomemorecomprehensive.Ofcourse,programmesstructuresandassessmentmethodsvaryacrossdifferentareasofstudy.Therefore,graduateswhowanttoapplyforHongKonguniversitiesshouldconsidertheircareergoalsandstudyplanstoidentifyamostsuitableapproachforfurtherstudies.

CriticismfromHongKongAcademics

TheUniversityGrantsCommitteepublishedareportonSept23,2012,statingthat83percentofthe10,770non-localstudentsstudyinginHongKonguniversitiesarefromthemainland,12.5percentfromotherpartsofAsiaandonly4.5percentfromtherestoftheworld.

Severalacademicscriticizethepredominanceofmainlandstudentswhoarepursuingacademicqualificationinlocaluniversities,assertingthatitwouldnothelplocaluniversitiestoclimbtheworldrankingladder,foronlystudentsoutsideHongKongandthemainlandarecountedasinternationalstudents,thepercentageofwhichisanevaluationcriteriaintheglobaluniversitiesrankinglist.Theyarguethattheexistingpercentageofmainlandstudentsamongnon-localstudentsisoutofproportion.Furthermore,theysuggestuniversitiesenhancetheireffortstomakelocalcampusestrulyinternationalandculturallydiverse.

Contrarytothoseacademics,thereisnothingwrongwiththelocaluniversitiesacceptingasmanyaspossiblestudentsthatcomefromthemainlandofChina.ImagingthefiercecompetitionmainlandstudentsarefacinginfightingforaplaceinHongKonguniversities,andonlythecreamofthecropcangetachance.Thesestudentsareintelligentandindustriousintheirstudies,asmostteacherscantestify,settinggoodexamplesforotherstudents.What’smore,aftergraduation,manymainlandstudentschoosetoworkinHongKong,contributingtothelocaleconomicprosperity,whereasmanyotheroverseasstudentschoosetoreturntotheirnativelandstoworkoncetheyfinishtheirstudiesinHongKong.

InordertoturnHongKongintoaninternationaleducationhub,thelocaluniversitiescanboosttheexchange-studentschemetoattractmoreforeignstudentstocometospendayearormoreinHongKonguniversities.Because,infact,whyshouldAmericanandBritishstudentschooseonefromHongKonguniversitiesinsteadofchoosingonefromthehundredsofhighqualityuniversitiesinowncountries?
