2.1AnOverviewofInterpersonalFunction

2.2.1Halliday'sModelofInterpersonalFunction
AccordingtoHalliday'sconceptualframeworkofSystemic-FunctionalGrammar,languageisviewedasasemioticsystem.Thissystemissustainedbyanetworkofinterrelatedandmufii-layeredsystemsofoptionsinmeaning.Inthissense,textisasemanticentity,whichisafunctionalconfigurationofchoiceofmeaning.Thusadiscoursegrammarindeedshouldbefunctionalandsemanticinitsorientation,withthegrammaticalstructuresexplainedastherealizationofsemanticpatterns.InSystemic-FunctionalGrammar,functionequalsmeaning(Halliday,2000).
Hallidayputsforwardthreemetafunctionsoflanguageincludingtheideationalmetafunction,theinterpersonalmetafunction,andthetextualmetafunctionbyobservingchildren'sacquisitionoflanguage.Hepointsoutthethreemetafunctionsareatthesamelevelandofthesameimportance.Halliday(1994)interpretsthethreemetafunctionsasfollowed:
