In1940,anAmericanwomannamedGenevieveGrotjanfoundsomeinformationbeingrepeatedinJapanesecodedmessages.HerdiscoveryhelpedtheUnitedStatesunderstandsecretJapanesediplomaticmessages.AftertheUnitedStatesunderstoodthecode,itwaspossibletostudymessagesfromtheJapaneseambassadortoGermanyandtohissupervisorsinJapan.
UnderstandingthesemessageshelpedtheUnitedStatesprepareforapossiblewarinthePacificwithJapan.AftertheattackonPearlHarbor,anAmericanNavalofficernamedJosephRochefortstruggledtounderstandtheJapanesenavycode.HeworkedontheAmericanbaseatPearlHarbor.Itwasearlyin1942.TheAmericannavalcommanderinthePacificOceanwasChesterNimitz.HisforcesweremuchsmallerthantheJapaneseNavalforces.AndtheJapanesehadbeenwinningmanyvictories.JosephRocheforthadworkedforseveralmonthstoreadthesecretJapaneseNavalcodecalledJN-25.Ifhecouldunderstandenoughofthecode,hewouldbeabletogiveAdmiralNimitzveryvaluableinformation.
Fromthebeginningof1942,theJapanesecodediscussedaplacecalled"AF."JosephRochefortfelttheJapanesewereplanninganimportantbattleaimedat"AF."Afterseveralweeks,heandothernavalexpertstoldAdmiralNimitzthattheirbestideawasthatthe"AF"intheJapanesecodewastheAmerican-heldislandofMidway.AdmiralNimitzsaidhemusthavemoreinformationtoprepareforsuchanattack.
TheNavyexpertsdecidedtotrickJapan.TheytoldtheAmericanmilitaryforceonMidwaytobroadcastafalsemessage.Themessagewouldsaytheislandwashavingproblemswithitswater-processingequipment.Themessageaskedthatfreshwaterbesenttotheislandimmediately.Thismessagewasnotsentincode.
Severaldayslater,aJapaneseradiobroadcastintheJN-25codesaidthat"AF"hadlittlewater.JosephRocheforthadtheevidenceheneeded."AF"wasnowknowntobetheislandofMidway.HealsotoldAdmiralNimitztheJapanesewouldattackMidwayonJune13.ThebattlethatfollowedwasahugeAmericanvictory.ThatvictorywaspossiblebecauseJosephRochefortlearnedtoreadenoughoftheJapanesecodetodiscoverthemeaningoftheletters"AF."
