TheincreaseinWiFiphysicallayertransmissionspeedsfrom1~Mbpsto1Gbpshasreducedtransmissiontimesfora1500bytepacketfrom12msto12us.However,WiFiMACoverheadssuchaschannelaccessandackshavenotseensimilarreductionsandcumulativelycontributeabout150usonaverageperpacket.Thus,theefficiencyofWiFihasdeterioratedfromover80%at1Mbpstounder10%at1Gbps.

Inthispaper,weproposeWiFi-Nano,asystemthatuses800nsslots}tosignificantlyimproveWiFiefficiency.Reducingslottimefrom9usto800nsmakesbackoffsefficient,butclearchannelassessmentcannolongerbecompletedinoneslotsincepreambledetectioncannowtakemultipleslots.Insteadofwaitingformultipleslotsfordetectingpreambles,nodesspeculativelytransmitpreamblesastheirbackoffcountersexpire,whilecontinuingtodetectpremablesusingself-interferencecancellation.Upondetectionofpreamblesfromothertransmitters,nodessimplyaborttheirownpreambletransmissions,therebyallowingtheearliesttransmittertosucceed.Further,receiversspeculativelytransmittheirackpreamblesattheendofpacketreception,therebyreducingackoverhead.WevalidatetheeffectivenessofWiFi-NanothroughimplementationonanFPGA-basedsoftwaredefinedradioplatform,andthroughextensivesimulations,demonstrateefficiencygainsofupto100%.

Contemporarywirelessmulti-hopnetworksoperatemuchbelowtheircapacityduetothepoorcoordinationamongtransmittingnodes.InthispaperwepresentXPRESS,across-layerbackpressurearchitecturedesignedtoreachthefullcapacityofwirelessmulti-hopnetworks.Insteadofacollectionofpoorlycoordinatedwirelessrouters,XPRESSturnsameshnetworkintoawirelessswitch.Transmissionsoverthenetworkarescheduledusingathroughput-optimalbackpressurealgorithm.Realizingthistheoreticalconceptentailsseveralchallenges,whichweidentifyandaddresswithacross-layerdesignandimplementationontopofourw
