TheexactnumberofEnglishwordsisnotknown.Thelargedictionarieshaveoverhalfamillionentries,butmanyofthesearecompoundwords(schoolroom,sugarbowl)ordifferentderivativesofthesameword(rare—rarely,rarefy),andagoodmanyareobsoletewordstohelpusreadolderliterature.Dictionariesdonotattempttocovercompletelywordsthatwecandrawon:
