HenryEdwardsHuntingtonwasbornin1850inOneonta,NewYork.In1872hewenttoworkforhisuncle,oneoftheownersoftheCentralPacificRailroad.Twentyyearslater,HuntingtonmovedtoSanFranciscoathisuncle’srequesttosharemanagementoftheSouthernPacificRailroad.OnthewaytoSanFrancisco,hevisitedSanMarino,andlaterboughtit,whichishometohiscollectionstoday.
In1902,HuntingtonmovedhisbusinessoperationstoLosAngeles,wherehedevelopedthestreetrailwaysystemthatcreatedthestructureoftheLosAngelesarea.Hegreatlyexpandedtheexistingelectricrailwaylines,creatinganextensiveinter-urbansystemprovidingthetransportationnecessary.Huntington’sbusinessinterestscontinuedtogrowparticularlyintheareasofwater,power,andlanddevelopment;atonetimeheservedonasmanyas60corporateboardsthroughouttheUnitedStates.
