Mei-lingwasborninHainanin1898,theyoungestdaughterofCharlieSoong.Attheageof8,shewassenttotheUnitedStatestogotoschool,whereshedidwell.ShegraduatedfromWellesleyCollegeinMassachusettsin1917withadegreeinEnglishLiterature.BecauseofhereducationMei-lingspokeexcellentEnglish.
AftergraduationMei-lingreturnedtoChinaandshemetChiangKai-shek（蒋介石）in1920.Shemarriedhimin1927afterhisdivorce.DuringthewaragainstJapan,Mei-lingactedasherhusband’sinterpreterandtranslator.SheworkedhardtopromotetheChinesecauseduringthewar,especiallyintheUnitedStates.In1943shebecamethefirstChinesenationalandonlythesecondwomantospeakbeforetheUSCongress（国会）.
Afterthedefeat（溃败）ofherhusband’sgovernmentin1949,Mei-lingmovedtoTaiwan.Shelivedthereuntilherhusband’sdeathin1975.ShethenemigratedtotheUSAandlivedonherfamily’sestate（别墅）inLattington,LongIsland,nearNewYork.Shespentmuchoftimepainting.
