3PhilosopherHannahArendtbelievesthattheonlypowerthatcanstopthestreamofpainfulmemoriesisthe“facultyofforgiving.”Inthatspirit,oneDecemberdayin1983,PopeJohnPaulIIwalkedintoacellofRebibbiaprisonoutsideRometomeetMehmetAliAgca.ThePopetookthehandofthemanwhohadtriedtokillhim,andforgavehim.
4Formostofus,however,itisnoteasytoforgive.Forgivingseemsalmostunnatural.Oursenseoffairnesstellsusthatpeopleshouldpayforthewrongtheydo.Butinforgivingwecanmovefromhurtingandhatingtohealingandreconciliation.
