1Someonehurtyou,maybeyesterday,maybelongago,andyoucannotforgetit.Youdidnotdeservethehurtandithaslodgeditselfinyourmemory,whereitkeepsonhurting.

2Youarenotalone.Weallmuddleourwaythroughaworldwhereevenwell-meaningpeoplehurtoneanother.Afriendbetraysus;

aparentabusesus;

aspouseleavesus.

3PhilosopherHannahArendtbelievesthattheonlypowerthatcanstopthestreamofpainfulmemoriesisthe“facultyofforgiving.”Inthatspirit,oneDecemberdayin1983,PopeJohnPaulIIwalkedintoacellofRebibbiaprisonoutsideRometomeetMehmetAliAgca.ThePopetookthehandofthemanwhohadtriedtokillhim,andforgavehim.

4Formostofus,however,itisnoteasytoforgive.Forgivingseemsalmostunnatural.Oursenseoffairnesstellsusthatpeopleshouldpayforthewrongtheydo.Butinforgivingwecanmovefromhurtingandhatingtohealingandreconciliation.

5Hateisournaturalresponsetodeepandunfairhurts.Awomanwishesherformerhusbandwouldbemiserablewithhisnewwife.Amanwhosefriendhasbetrayedhimhopesthefriendwillbefiredfromhisjob.Hateisamalignancythatfestersandgrows,stiflingjoyandthreateningourhealth.1Ithurtsthehatermorethanthehated.Itmustbecutout—forourownsake.

Howcanyouletgoofahurt,thewayachildopenshishandsandfreesatrappedbutterfly?

Hereareguidelinestohelpyoubegintoforgive:

7Confrontyourmalice.Noneofuswantstoadmitthatwehatesomeone,sowehideitfromourselves.Butthefurydeniedragesbeneaththesurfaceandinfectsallourrelationships.2Admittingourhatecompelsustomakeadecisionaboutthesurgeryofthesoulwecallforgiving.Wemustacknowledgewhathashappened,faceuptotheotherpersonandsay:

“Youdidmewrong.”

8LizwasanassistantprofessorofbiologyatauniversityinCalifornia.Shewasagoodteacher,andthechairmanofherdepartmentpromisedtoaskthedeantopromoteher.Instead,hisreportwassocriticalofherperformancethatthedeanadvisedhertolookforanotherjob.

dramaofatonement,howGodtookabundleofhumansinsoffman’sback,tiedittoagoat,andsentthe“scapegoat”toa“solitaryland.”Forgivingisfindinganewvisionofthepersonwhohaswrongedus,thepersonstrippedofhissins—whoreallylivesbeneaththecloakofhiswrongdoing.4

11Thefirstgiftwegetwhenweseparatethewrongfromthewrongdoeris

insight.Aswecometoseethedeepertruthaboutpeople—thattheyarefallible—ourfeelingschange.At16myadopteddaughter,Cathy,wasahotheadwhobitterlyresentedhernaturalmotherforgivingheraway.5Whyhadshenotbeenworthkeeping?

Thenshefoundoutthatherparentshadbeenveryyoungandpoorandnotmarried.

12Aboutthistime,oneofCathy’sfriendsbecamepregnantand,infearand

doubt,gaveupherbabyforadoption.Cathysharedherfriend’sconflict,andwassureherdecisionhadbeenright.Graduallyshecametofeelthatherownmother,too,haddonetherightthing—shehadgivenherbabyawaybecauseshelovedhertoomuchtokeepher.Cathy’snewunderstandingbroughtherresentmentdowntoforgivingsize.

13Letgoofthepast.Afriendofmine,abeautifulactress,wasleftcrippledby

acaraccidentafewyearsago.Herhusbandstayedwithheruntilshehadpartiallyrecovered.Then,coldly,helefther.

14Shecouldhavemortgagedherfuturetohate.6Instead,sheforgaveher

husbandandwishedhimwell.Iwasskeptical.“Supposehemarriedasexyyoungstarlet.Wouldyouwishhimtobehappywithher?

16Thisdoesnotmeanmyfriendhasentirelyforgottenthehurt.Infact,

forgettingtoosoonmaybeadangerouswaytoescapeforgiving’sinnersurgery.7Oncewehaveforgiven,however,forgettingisasignofhealth.Wecanforget,eventually,becausewearehealed.

17Don’tgiveuponforgiveness—keepworkingatit.Asaboy,theBritish

scholarC.S.Lewiswasbadlyhurtbyabullyofateacher.Formostofhislifehecouldnotforgivetheteacherandthistroubledhim.Butnotlongbeforehedied,hewrotetoafriend:

“onlyafewweeksago,IrealizedsuddenlythatIhadatlastforgiventhecruelschoolmasterwhosodarkenedmychildhood.I’dbeentryingtodoitforyears,andeachtimeIthoughtI’ddoneit,Ifoundithadtobeattemptedagain.ButthistimeIfeelsureitistherealthing.”
