UntilFriday,onlyoneDemocrat,ChuckSchumerofNewYork,hadannouncedoppositiontothedeal.Sincethen,hehasbeenjoinedbySenatorsBenCardinofMarylandandRobertMenendezofNewJersey.

“Weknowthat,despitethefactthatIranclaimsitsnuclearprogramisforpeacefulpurposes,thattheyhaveviolatedtheinternationalwillasexpressedbyvariousU.N.SecurityCouncilresolutions,andbydeceit,deceptionanddelayadvancedtheirprogramtothepointofbeingathresholdnuclearstate,"

saidMenendez.

GivenunifiedRepublicanoppositiontotheaccord,alleyesareontheremaininghandfulofDemocraticsenatorsyettoannounce.Already,thereisamplebackingtosustainPresidentBarackObama’spromisedvetoofaresolutionofdisapprovalfromCongress.TheundecidedsenatorswilldeterminewhetherSenateactioncanbeblockedaltogether.

“Ifthathappens,theresolutionofdisapprovalwon’treachthepresident’sdesk,andtherewillbenoneedtoexercisetheveto.That’satoughgoalbutapossibleone,"
