TheNorwegian(挪威的)governmentisplanningtocreatetheseedbanknextyearattherequestofcropscientists.The$3millionvaultwillbebuiltdeepinsideasandstonemountainontheNorwegianArcticislandofSpitsbergen.Thevaultwillhavemetre-thickwallsofreinforcedconcreteandwillbeprotectedbehindtwoairlocksandhigh-securitydoors.

Thevault’sseedcollectionwillrepresenttheproductsofsome10,000yearsofplantbreedingbytheworld’sfamers.Thoughmostarenolongerwidelyplanted,thevarietiescontainvitalgeneticpropertiesstillregularlyusedinplantbreeding.

Tosurvive,theseedsneedfreezingtemperatures.Operatorsplantoreplacetheairinsidethe

vaulteachwinter,whentemperaturesinSpitsbergenarearound-18℃.Butevenifsomedisastermeantthatthevaultwasabandoned,thepermanentlyfrozensoilwouldkeeptheseedsalive.Andevenacceleratedglobalwarmingwouldtakemanydecadestopenetratethemountainvault.

“Thiswillbetheworld’smostsecuregenebank,”saysFowler.“Butitsseedswillonlybeusedwhenallothersampleshavegoneforsomereason.”
