OnereasonwastodowiththeinfluenceoftheChristianChurch.ThroughthethousandyearsfollowingthefalloftheRomanEmpire,theChurchcontrolledmanyaspectsoflifeincludingeducationandlearning.TheChurchranalltheuniversitiesandthoughtthattheaimofauniversityshouldbetoteacholdideasmoreclearly,nottointroducenewones.ThescholarsintheuniversitieswereexpectedtostudyGodandheavenfromtheBibleandancientbooks,ratherthantheworldaroundthem.
Takemedicineforexample.ThemaintextbookfordoctorshadbeenwrittenbyaGreekdoctorcalledGalenmorethanathousandyearsearlier.ButwhenRogerBacon,athirteenth-centurypriest(牧师),saidthatanewapproachtomedicinewasneeded-doctorsshoulddotheirownoriginalresearchinsteadofreadingwritersfromthepastsuchasGalen-theChurchputhiminprison.
Bythetimeofthefourteenthcentury,however,somepartsoftheChristianChurchwerebecominglessstrictabouttheirideasandtherewasanewstateofmindamongartists,doctorsandscientist.Peoplewantedtofindoutmoreabouttheworldbystudyingit.Thisattitudeofinvestigationhadbeencommoninclassicalscholars,anditwas‘reborn’duringtheRenaissance.

Goingtocollegehasbeenabigchangeforme.Therewereonly25peopleinmygraduationclass,andnowIgotoschoolwiththousands.Onmyreservation,IwassurroundedmostlybyNatives,andatcollege,theNativepopulationisonly0.07%.It’sintimidatingbutexciting.
I’mstudyingtobecomeavet(兽医)-therearen’tanyonmyreservation.Ifananimalgetssick,youhavetodriveanhourtogetthemhelp.Mygoalistoopenaveterinaryclinicthatwillhelpmyreservationdevelop.
