Abstract
ItisJackKerouacwhofirstproposedtheconceptoftheBeatGeneration.OntheRoad,amasterpieceofKerouac,isthemostimportantnoveloftheBeatGenerationliterature.DeanisthemaincharacterinOntheRoad,andhisprototypeinrealityisNealCassady.Besides,Kerouac,thewriterhimselfistheprototypeofSalParadiseinthebook,andAllenGinsbergistheprototypeofCarloMarx.DeanisatypicalpersoninOntheRoadandineventhewholeBeatGeneration.Heisadevilaswellasanangel.Fortheevilside,heisadrugaddict,atippler(酒鬼),athief,areprobate(恶棍),amadman,andhewilldoanythingwhichviolatesthelaw.Fortheangelside,heisakind,vigorous,determinedandcharminggentleman.Everyonelikeshim,andeveryoneiscrazyabouthim.TheauthorKerouacadmitsthat,Dean,the“mad”manistheonlyclear-headedpersonatthatage.TheBeatGenerationwhichisrepresentedbyDean,hasit’sspecialsocialandculturalbackgrounds.Thus,thisgenerationisfarmorecomplicatedthanthenormaldegenerates.ThispapermainlyfocusesonthecharacteranalysisofDean,whosepurposeistogetintotherealDean,andtouncovertheveiloftheBeatGeneration.

摘要
“垮掉的一代”是杰克•凯鲁亚克首先提出来的,并且他的《在路上》是“垮掉的一代”文学中最重要的作品。
迪恩是凯鲁亚克小说《在路上》的主人翁,他是以“垮掉的一代”典型现实人物尼尔•卡萨迪为原型的。
此外凯鲁亚克是这部作品中萨尔的原型,艾伦•金斯伯格是卡罗•马克斯的原型。
作品中迪恩是垮掉派的领头人物。
具备着垮掉的一代所有典型特征。
他集天使与恶魔于一身,他吸毒、酗酒、偷窃、颓废、放纵、离经叛道、桀骜不驯、无恶不作,但他同时也温柔善良﹑执着坚毅、无所畏惧、热血沸腾、充满激情、赋有魅力,让周围所有男男女女都为他着迷。
然而作者却说这个“疯子”是那个时代唯一清醒的人。
以迪恩为代表的垮掉的一代的形成有其特定的社会和历史文化背景,这一代的特征也远比一般的堕落更复杂。
本文旨在从迪恩这一典型人物的性格分析入手,了解真正的迪恩,并剖析垮掉一代的真正内涵。

Humanpersonalityiscontradictory,DeanissuchadoublecharacterinOntheRoad.InthenovelDeanshowsbothpositivesideandnegativeside.DeanisalsoaverytypicalfigureoftheBeatGeneration.Hiscomplexcharacterisworthstudying.OntheRoadisamasterpiecebyKerouac.ThisnovelisfamousforexposingthelivingstateoftheyouthsaftertheSecondWorldWar,exposingthecorruption,selfishness,andhypocrisyofsocietyandexploringthespiritualworldoftheBeatGeneration.ThroughthisnovelwecanfollowthewriterintothereallifeoftheBeatGenerationandgettoknowthepeoplewholiveatthebottomoftheAmericasociety.ThisthesisaimsathelpingreadersappreciatethisdebatablegenerationbyanalyzingDean’sroleandhischaracter.Iamgoingtoexplorethereasonsfortheshapingofhischaracterfromseveralaspects.Andtogetsomeusefulconclusionsbyassociatingitwithmodernsociety.

2.1TheMainStoryofOntheRoad
OntheRoadisanautobiographicalfictionbyJackKerouac.ItisaStoryabouttworestlessyoungmeninthelate1940swhocrossandrecrossAmerica,searchingforparties,girls,drugs,lonelinessandtheirowndreamsalongtheway.Thisbookcanbedividedintofivepartsandeverypartisajourneyexperience.Atthefirstpart,DeanMoriartystopsSalParadise’sstablelifewhentheyfirstmeetinNewYork,1947.Atthattime,Deanjustescapesfromajailandnewlymarried.HecomestoNewYork,meetsagroupofyoungwritersandmakesfriendswiththem.Amonghisfriends,youcanseetheyoungwriterSalParadiseandthepoetCarloMarx.Deanlikestheseguys,andsodothey.TheirrelationshipbecomescloserbyyearsofrestlessjourneysbackandforthacrosstheAmerica.Withacombinationofallkindsofadventuresandescapades,SalsometimesgoestowesttojoinDeanandmorefriendsinDenver,andsometimesgoeswestbyhimself.HeworksasafieldworkerinCaliforniaforawhile,withinthattimeliveswithamarriedMexicogirl,Terry,theymeetonthewaytoCalifornia.Whentheweathergettingtoocoldtoworkinthefiled,hehastoleavethefieldandTerry,andbacktohomegoesonhiswriting.
Atthesecondpart,ithappensin1948,whenDean’slifeisinamiserablechaos,hedropshispregnantwifeCamilleathomealoneandbringshisex-wifeMaryloutoeasttofindSalagain.Lifeoncemorebecomescrazy,andtheydrivewesttogether,withmorecrazyadventuresontheroad.Thewinterafterthat,SalgoestoDean,andthenDeansettlesinNewYorkforawhile.
Atthethirdpart,ithappensinthespringof1949,SalgoestoDenveralone,butDeansoonjoinshim.TheytravelacrosstheAmericancontinentandbacktowest.SalknowsbetteraboutDeanandhisgirlsafterthetravel,andtheirfriendshipcomestoahigherplace.
Atthefourthpart,theygosouthtoMexicoCity,theterminalplaceoftheirjourney.DeanplanstogetacheapdivorcepaperstherewithhissecondwifeCamille.InMexicotheygosightseeinginthecarandrepeatthesamecrazybehaviorastheyareinAmerica.TheymakefriendswithVictor,alocalresidentinMexico.Victorisaverykindman,theyaskVictortogivethemmarijuana(大麻)andleadthemtohangwhorehouse(妓院).TheyspendahappytimeinMexico,butSalgetastrongfeverinthelastfewdaysinMexico,DeancannotwaittobreakupwithCamilleandtogetmarriedwithInez.SoDeanleavesthesickSalandStaininMexico,driveshomealone.
Atthelastofthebook,becausealetterofSal,DeancannothelptomissingSal,soDeanstopshisplan,comestoeastimmediately,toseeSalandSal’sgirlfriend.HejustspendsthreedayswithSal,heevendoesnotknowwhyhecomeshereexceptseeingSal,thenhebackstowestbyfivedaysoftrain.AtlasthecomestoNewYorkagain.ButhefailstoaskSalandhisfriendtojoinhisjourney,sotheold,lonelyandsadDeantravelsalonethistime.Inreality,Cassady,theprototypeofDeanisdiedathislastjourneytoMexico,noneofhisfriendsknowthereasonwhyhimdying.Hisdeathbecomesalastingmistery.
ThemainstoryofOntheRoadisbasedonKerouacandhisfriends’travelexperience,andthemaincharactersareoriginatedfromthewriterhimselfandhisfriends.ManyofthemareprominentBeatGenerationwriterslikeAllenGinsberg(whoisCarloMarxinOntheRoad),WilliamBurroughs("

tobeinastateofbeatitude,likeSaintFrancis,tryingtolovealllife,tryingtobeutterlysincerewitheveryone...”TheBeatGenerationareatthebottomofsociety,buttheyareoptimistic,theyenjoyseveryday.AnditassociatedwithsomephrasesfromBuddhismbywhichtheywereinfluenced.Theyoungwriterswhoaretiredofconventionalsociety,believethatthoroughgoingbreakupfromallaspectsofthemannersandmoralsofwhattheyseeasacorruptcommercialworldwouldbringamoremeaningfullife,justlikethefabulousillusionscreatedbydrug,alcoholorothers.

JackKerouacwasborninLowell,Massachusetts,in1922.Diedin1969whenhewas47yearsold.HisparentsareFrench-Canadianimmigrates.HehadaprivateandCatholicearlyeducation,andhegotafootballscholarshiptoColumbiaUniversity,wherehemetthefamouspoetAllenGinsbergwhowrotethelongpoemHowl,andWilliamBurroughs.KerouacquitschoolinhissophomoreyearandthenjoinedtheMerchantMarine,whichstartsthetravelofhisyouthandthatwouldbecomethebasisofOntheRoad,hissecondandmostfavorednovel.HisfirstnovelisTheTownandtheCity.OntheRoadwaspublishedin1957,itmakesKerouacbecomethemostfamouswriteroftheBeatGeneration.
