3.1Whyisitpossibleforstylisticanalysis?

3.2.2ComponentsandProcedure
•Threecomponentsinstylisticanalysis:

•Thethreepartsarelogicallyordered,descriptionislogicallypriortointerpretationbecauseareasonablyconvincinginterpretationofaliterarytextisonlyderivedfromacarefulandsystematicexaminationofitslanguage;
interpretationisalsopriortoevaluation,sinceanevaluationofapoemisalwaysrelativetosomeinterpretation.
•Halliday(1983)components:
analyticalphaseandinterpretativephase,andevaluationphase(notexplicitlymentioned).Itisnotbeingsuggestedthatanalysisandinterpretationareseparateportionsofthetask,tobeperformedinsequencewithonestartingonlywhentheotherhasended.

B)Youarewelcometodiscusswithmeanyquestionsforthetopicinthiscourse.
C)Youareencouragedtoacquireacriticalreadinginyourlessonandkeepsharpeyestothelimitationsofthetheoryandfindnewwaystoovercomesuchlimitationsinyouranalysis.
