  Aswitchmansatinasmallshackononesideoftheriverwhereheoperatedthecontrolstoturnthebridgeandlockitintoplaceasthetraincrossed.Oneeveningastheswitchmanwaswaitingforthelasttrainofthedaytocome,helookedoffintothedistancethruthedimmingtwilightandcaughtsightofthetrainlights.Hesteppedtothecontrolandwaiteduntilthetrainwaswithinaprescribeddistancewhenhewastoturnthebridge.Heturnedthebridgeintoposition,but,tohishorror,hefoundthelockingcontroldidnotwork.Ifthebridgewasnotsecurelyinpositionitwouldwobblebackandforthattheendswhenthetraincameontoit,causingthetraintojumpthetrackandgocrashingintotheriver.Thiswouldbeapassengertrainwithmanypeopleaboard.Heleftthebridgeturnedacrosstheriver,andhurriedacrossthebridgetotheothersideoftheriverwheretherewasaleverswitchhecouldholdtooperatethelockmanually.Hewouldhavetoholdtheleverbackfirmlyasthetraincrossed.Hecouldheartherumbleofthetrainnow,andhetookholdoftheleverandleanedbackwardtoapplyhisweighttoit,lockingthebridge.Hekeptapplyingthepressuretokeepthemechanismlocked.Manylivesdependedonthisman&
