Finally,aroundtheturnofthe20thcentury,anewinterestintheAntarcticandtheSouthPoledeveloped.In1911,aracetotheSouthPolebetweentwoexplorersbegan.TheracewasbetweenRoaldAmundsenofNorwayandRobertScottofBritain.OnDecember14,1911,

AmundsenandhisfourcompanionsreachedtheSouthPole.Amonthlater,ScottalsoreachedtheSouthPole.Amundsenreturnedhomesafely,butScottandhismenneverreturnedbecausetheyfrozeorstarvedtodeath.
