TheMcDowellMountainMusicFestivalisPhoenix’smusicalcelebrationofcommunityculture.Sinceitsfoundingin2004,itistheonly100%non–profitmusicfestivaldesignedtosupport,entertainandeducatethecommunity.Thefestivalattractsthousandsofvisitorseachyearfromaroundthecountry,anditisanopportunitytoexperiencetrueculture.

Awomantoldmehowmuchstressherfriendwassufferingfromandhowshesoughttoconvinceherthatsheneededtofindwaystorelax.Shegaveheravideotapeonstressmanagementandrelaxationtechniques,andencouragedhertowatchitrightaway.Fifteenminuteslater,herfriendhandedbackthetape.“Itwasgood,”shesaid,”butIdon’tneedit.”

Intheirresearch,ProfessorMartinsenandProfessorLarsGlassurveyed(调查)2,900managerswithaspecialfocusonpersonalitytypes.Theresultswereclear:

Womenscoredhigherthanmeninfourofthefivemajorleadership-centriccategories.

Whilesomepeoplebelievethatmeninherentlymakebetterleaders—probablybecausetheypicturealeaderwithacommandingvoice,whichismoretypicalofmenthanwomen—thispieceofresearchsuggeststhatwomenarebetteratmethodicalmanagementandgoal-setting,openness,sociabilityandsupportiveness,aswellasabilitytocommunicateclearly.

Therewasoneareainwhichmenscoredhigherthanwomen,though,andthatwasonemotionalstabilityandabilitytofacejob-relatedpressureandstress.Theresultssuggestthatwomenaremoresensitivetotheeffectsofhigh-pressureorhighlyemotionalsituations.
