  Duringthisterm,IhavereadanovelTheRedandtheBlack.ThenovelwaswrittenbytheFrenchwriterStendhalinthe19thcentury.Marie·HenriBeyle,betterknownbyhispennameStendhal,wasoneofthecriticalrealismFrenchwritersinthe19thcentury.ThemilitaryandtheatricalworldsoftheFirstFrenchEmpirewerearevelationtoBeyle.Knownforhisacuteanalysisofhischaracters’psychologyandreflectionofsociety,heisconsideredoneoftheearliestandforemostpractitionersofrealisminhistwonovelsLeRougeetleNoir(TheRedandtheBlack,1830)andLaChartreusedeParme(TheCharterhouseofParma,1839)。

StendhallaiddownforhimselfinadiaryentryofMay1804:

“regardeverythingI’vereadtodateaboutmanasaprediction;believeonlywhatIhaveseenformyself.Joy,happiness,fame,allisuponit.”Futuritycallitrealismcreationmethod.InFrance,Stendhalwasthefirstlitterateurtorevealcorruptionofthebourgeoisiethroughliterature.
