1.TheInternethasdramaticallyalteredourlivesoverthepastfewdecades.Althoughsomeofthesechangeshavebeennegative,theoveralleffectofthistechnologyhasbeenpositive.Whatareyouropinionsonthis?
TheInternethasbroughtsignificantchangestoourlivesinrecentyears.Yet,thereremainssomedisagreementastowhethertheoveralleffectofthistechnologyhasbeenpositiveornegative.Whiletherearecertainlyvalidargumentstothecontrary,IpersonallybelievethatthebenefitsoftheInternetfaroutweighitsdrawbacks.Thesebenefitsaretwofold.
Firstofall,itisanindisputablefactthattheInternethasrevolutionizedthewaywecommunicate.Despitetheriskofsocialisolation—aproblemoccasionallyseeninpeoplewhospendtoomuchtimeattheircomputerterminalratherthanrelatingtopeopleintherealworld---mostofushavebenefitedgreatlyfrome-mailandinternetchatprogramslikeMSNMessenger.Theseincrediblyusefulandpowerfultoolsofcommunicationfacilitatebothcontactwithlovedonesinfarawayplacesandglobaltrade.
Equallyimportantly,though,theInternethasplacedtheentireworld(andalloftheinformationinit)atourfingertips.Inearliertimes,conductingresearchentailedlonghourssearchinglibraryshelves.Now,however,thesameinformationcanbeaccessedattheclickofabutton.Admittedly,notalloftheinformationavailableontheInternetisreliableorhelpful---thereisavastamountofmaterialonlinethatsomewouldconsideroffensiveordangerous,rangingfrompornographytoinstructionsonhowtomakebombs.Nonetheless,Iwouldcontendthatthisfreeflowofinformationhasgenerallybeenaverypositivedevelopment.
Bywayofconclusion,IonceagainreaffirmmypositionthattheInternethashadapositiveimpactonmodernlifebecauseofitsinfluenceoncommunicationandtheflowofinformation.
2.Fastfoodisnowuniversallyavailableinmostcountriesandisbecomingincreasinglypopular.Somefeelthatthisisapositivetrend,whileothersdonot.Whatareyouropinionsonthis?
Thepast50yearshaveseenadramaticincreaseintheavailabilityoffastfood.Somelauditsconvenienceandrelativelylowcost;however,inthisessayIintendtoarguethatthiskindoffoodisdetrimentalbothtotheindividualsthatconsumeitandtosocietyatlarge.Therearetwoprimaryreasonsforthis.
Firstofthat,itisanundeniablefactthatconsumingfastfoodtoexcessresultsinserioushealthproblems.Foodssuchasfriedchicken,hamburgersandchips---whichareincrediblyhighinfatandsalt---areresponsibleforsuchailmentsashighbloodpressure,obesityandheartdisease.Moreover,althoughIcertainlyagreethatfastfoodisbothaffordableandconvenient,thecostandinconvenienceoftreatingtheillnessesitcausesinlaterlifearesignificant.Inorderwords,whilefastfoodisbeneficialintheshortterm,itslong-termeffectsaregenerallynegative.
Furtherandevenmoreimportantly,though,somefastfoodchainsdeliberatelyattempttoattractchildreninordertoshapetheirfutureeatinghabits.OneparticularlygoodexampleofthisisthecharacterRonaldMcDonald---thebrightclothesandsmileoftheMcDonaldclownareabeacontochildren.HavinggrownupeatinginMcDonaldrestaurants,peoplearelikelytocontinueeatingtherethroughouttheiradultlives.ItisalsointerestingtonotethatMcDonaldprovidesplaygroundsandfrequentlyholdschildren’sbirthdaypartiesinordertoattractyoungchildrenandtheirparents.
Bywayofconclusion,Ibelievethatfastfoodwillcontinuetobecomemorepopularasthepaceoflifeincreases.Giventhehealthrisksassociatedwiththistrend,Ibelievethatpubliceducationcampaignswarningpeopleaboutthedangersoffastfoodwouldbewarranted.
3.Internationaltourismisnowmorecommonthaneverbefore.Somefeelthatthisisapositiontrend,whileothersdonot.Whatareyouropinionsonthis?
Thepast50yearshaveseenaconsiderableincreaseinglobaltourism.Despitetheundeniableeconomicprosperityithasbroughttomanyhostcountries,Iwouldarguethattheoverallimpactofinternationalholidaymakinghasinfactbeennegative.Twooftheprimarydrawbacksassociatedwiththistrendareasfollows.
Firstofall,globaltourismtendstoexportmanynegativeaspectsofwesternculture.Sinceitisonlythewealthywhocanaffordtotravelabroad,developingcountrieslikeThailandandIndonesiahavebecometheplaygroundsoftouristsfrommoreaffluentones.Inmanysuchnations,thisinfluxofmainlywesterntouristshasbroughtwithitproblemssuchasprostitutionaswellasalcoholismanddrugabuse.Admittedly,internationaltourismdoeshavethepotentialtofostergreaterunderstandingandtolerancebetweenpeopleofdifferentcultures.However,thisisunlikelytooccurwhileitremainssuchapotentsymbolofwesternculturaldominationandmoraldecadence.
Evenmoredisturbing,though,istheenvironmentaldegradationthatinternationaltourismhascausedinmanypartsoftheworld.OneparticularlysalientexampleofthisistheGreatBarrierReefinAustralia---thecountlessboats,diversandsnorkelersthathavevisitedthereefoverthepastfewdecadeshavegraduallydestroyedvastsectionsofcoral.Similarly,worldrenownedKutaBeachinBalihasbecomeheavilypollutedinrecentyears.Inordertobesustainable,greaterregulationofglobaltourismisrequired.
Inconclusion,thechallengespresentedbytheboominginternationaltouristindustryarenumerousandcomplex.Althoughtheyarebynomeansinsurmountable,itishighlyunlikelythattheywillberesolvedintheforeseeablefuture.
4.Nowadays,morepeoplearemigratingtoothercountriesthaneverbefore.Inordertobecomeintegratedintosocietyintheiradoptedcountries,immigrantsshouldabandontheiroldwaysandadapttolocalcustomsandcodesofbehavior.Doyouagreeordisagree?
Thesedays,itseemsthatmorepeoplearemigratingtoothercountriesthaneverbefore.Thisraisescertainquestionsabouttheintegrationofnewcomersintosociety.Althoughtherearevalidargumentstothecontrary,inthispaperIwillarguethatitistheresponsibilityofimmigrantstoadapttoacceptedrulesofbehaviorintheiradoptedcountry,bothwrittenandunwritten.Thereasonsforthisaretwofold.
Firstly,itisvitallyimportantthatnewcomersobservethelawsoftheiradoptedcountryforthesakeofsocialorder.Imaginethechaosthatwouldensureifpeoplerefusedtodriveonthesamesideoftheroad.Itis,therefore,necessaryforallimmigrantstoensurethattheyobservethelawintheirnewcountryregardlessofanydifferencestolawsintheirhomecountry.Twofurtherinstancesofpracticeswhicharepermittedinsomecountriesbutprohibitedinordersarethepossessionoffirearmsandgambling.
Secondlyandmoreimportantly,though,inordertomaintainsocietalcohesionitisessentialthatnewcomersrespectthesocialnormsoftheiradoptedcountry.Ofcourse,havingamixtureofdifferentculturesandtraditionsgivesacountrycolourandvibrancy;however,Iwouldcontendthattoomuchculturaldiversityunderminesasocietybyalienatingpeoplefromeachother.Itismybeliefthatsimilaritiesunitepeople,whereasdifferenceshaveatendencytodivide.Astrongsocietyisahomogenoussocietywithsharedvaluesandgoals.
Bywayofconclusion,Ibelievethatthisissueislikelytobecomeevenmoreimportantinthefutureasbordersbetweencountriesbecomeincreasinglyblurred.It,therefore,demandsourfurtherconsideration.
5.Menandwomenaredifficultintermsoftheircharacteristicsandabilities.Forthisreason,somejobsarebetterdonebymenandothersbywomen.Doyouagreeordisagree?

Firstofall,Ibelieveitisamistaketobaseourviewsonbroadgeneralizationsaboutthecharacteristicsofmenandwomenassuchstereotypesareofteninaccurate.Althoughtherearecertainlytraitswhicharetypicalofmenandotherswhicharetypicalofwomen,thereareexceptionstoeveryrule.Notallwomenarephysicallyweak,justasnotallmenarepoorinterpersonalcommunicators;conventionalgenderrolesarenotappropriateforeverybody.Ifamanorwomandesirestopursueacareerwhichistraditionallyreservedfortheoppositesex,Ibelievehe/sheshouldbeprovidedtheopportunitytoprovehim/herselfcapable.
Secondly,Iwouldcontendthatthepresenceofbothmalesandfemalesinaworkplacebringsasenseofbalance.Menandwomenfrequently,thoughbynomeansalways,havedifferentmethodsofdoingthings.Ratherthanjudgingthesedifferencestobeweaknesses,Ifeelthatweshouldviewthemasopportunitiesforinnovationandthediscoveryofmoreeffectiveandefficientworkpractices.Aperson’sweaknessescanthusbetransformedintostrengths.
