Perhapsnot,buttheriseoftheInternet,whichhasmadethedailynewspaperlookslowandoutofstepwiththeworld,hasbroughtaboutarealsenseofdeath.SomeAmericannewspapershavelost42%oftheirmarketvalueinthepastthreeyears.TheNewYorkTimesCompanyhasseenitsstock(股票)dropby54%sincetheendof2004,withmuchofthelosscominginthepastyear.AmanageratDeutscheBanksuggestedthatstock-holderssellofftheirTimesstock.

TheWashingtonPostCompanyhaspreventedthetroubleonlybychangingpartofitsbusinesstoeducation;itstestingandtest-preparationservicenowbringsinatleasthalfthecompany'sincome.

AnotherstudycarriedoutbytheCamposCompanyfortheBayerCorporationintheUnitedStatesaskedmorethan1,000womenandminoritymembersoftheAmericanChemicalSocietyabouttheirexperiences.77%saidnotenoughwomenandminoritiesareworkinginSTEMtoday,becausetheywerenotencouragedtostudythosesubjectsinschool.

Thestudy,producingresultssimilartotheAAUWresearchshowedthere’sstillalotofworktobedone.“Theysaytheirinterestinsciencebeginsbeforetheageofeleven.Soweneedprogramsthatgetinfrontofkidswhilethey’reyounginelementaryschool.”
