TheseadultswerethendividedintogroupsthatrandomlyreceiveddifferentcombinationsofvitaminsB,CandE,themineralselenium(硒)oraplacebo(安慰剂).

MostpatientswithHIVbecomedeficientinthesevitamins,whichhelpimproveimmunity(免疫).Baumsaidsheinitiallythoughtthemultivitaminsaloneorseleniumalonewouldbeeffectiveinstrengtheningtheimmunesystem,butfoundthatincorrect.

“AsimplemultivitaminsupplementationwithseleniumprovidedearlyinHIVdiseasecanactuallyslowtheHIVdiseaseprogressionanditissafe.ItislowcostanditshouldbeprovidedveryearlyinHIVinfection,”saidBaum.

Baumsaidthesupplementsarenotmeanttoreplaceanti-retroviraltherapy,butcanhelpthosewhocannotobtainthedrugs.

Dr.AnthonyFauci,aworldfamousexpertonAIDS,disagrees.

“Ihaven’treadthepaper,buthavingtakencareofHIV-infectedindividualsforthreedecades,Iwoulddoubtthatvitaminsaregoingtohaveamajoreffectonstoppingthevirus,”saidFauci.
