Inthe1880s,MarkTwainmanagedhisownpublishingcompany.Healsobecameinterestedinvariousinvestments（投资）,especiallyakindoftypesettingmachine.Helostalmost$200,000ininvestmentsinthemachinebetween1881and1894.Also,hispublishingcompanydeclaredbankruptcy（破产）inApril1894.Thus,inJanuary1895,MarkTwainfoundhimselfpubliclyshamedbyhisinabilitytopayhisdebts.

Althoughhewasrecoveringfromhisfinancialproblemsby1898,MarkTwainhadbeguntoexperiencetragedy（悲剧）inhispersonallife.Suzy,hisoldestdaughter,diedofmeningitis（脑膜炎）in1896,whileherparentsandsisterClarawereabroad.In1903,MarkTwainsoldthebelovedhouseinHartford,whichhadbecometoocloselyassociatedwithSuzy’sdeath.Hiswife,Olivia,whohaddevelopedaheartcondition,diedonJune5,1904.Hisyoungestdaughter,Jean,diedonDec.24,1909.
