Theideaofafamilyseemstoexistineveryculturearoundtheworld,butthatdoesn’tmeanthattheword‘family’hasthesamemeaningeverywhere.Infact,differentculturesunderstandtheword‘family’indifferentways.Oneimportantdifferenceinthewayfamiliesareseenisthedifferencebetweenthe‘nuclearfamily’andthe‘extendedfamily’.A‘nuclearfamily’onlyhastwogenerationswholivetogether,i.e.themotherandfatherandtheirchildren.MostfamiliesinWesternEuropeareprobablynuclearfamilies.Insomecases,ifthemother(orsometimes,father)isnotmarriedorisdivorcedwetalkabouta‘one-parentfamily’.Anextendedfamilyusuallyhasthreegenerationswholivetogetherorveryneartoeachother,i.e.oneormorechildren,theirparentsandtheirgrandparents.Insomeplacesanextendedfamilymightincludebothsetsofgrandparentsorevenotherrelativessuchasauntsoruncles.

2.Friendswiththesameinterests

Thesearefriendswhohavethesamehobbyorinterestasyou.Perhapsyouplayinthesamefootballteamorbasketballteam.Youcanhavegoodconversationswiththesefriendsbecauseyouhavethesameinterests,andyouhavelearntsomethingabouttheircharacterbyplayingsportormusicwiththemorsharingsomeotherinterestwiththem.Youcanlearnalotaboutpeopleby,forexample,playingasportwiththem.Youcanfindoutifthepersonishonest,dependable,unselfish,andsoon.Withthiskindoffriendyoucanhavealotoffun,butyouprobablywouldn’ttalktothemaboutyourfeelingsorsomeproblemyouhave.

Phew!

I’msogladthatdayisover.Iwassoworriedallsummerthatmyfirstdayatmynewschoolwouldbeterrible.

I’mreallytired,butmyfirstdayatschoolwentwellandIfeelmuchbetternow.

You’reprobablyfeelingexcitedandmaybealittlesadthatsummerisover.Somekidsfeelnervousoralittlescaredonthefirstdayofschoolbecauseofallthenewthings:

newteachers,newfriends,andmaybeevenanewschool.Luckily,these‘new’worriesonlystayforalittlewhile.Let’sfindoutmoreaboutgoingbacktoschool.

OnenightIwenttoHimeji,acitynotfarfromKobe.AsIwalkedwithmyfamilyalongtheriverIsawastatue.Itwasayoungmanwholookedjustlikeme.Hewaswearingacapandsmiling.Aroundhisneckwasaleatherstrapandinhishandswasasaxophone.Hewasliftingthesaxophonetohislipsandhewasjustabouttoplay.MyfamilywalkedonuptherivertowardsthecastlebutIstayedtherebythestatue,dreamingofplayingasaxophoneonTV.

Inmanycountriesoralstorytellingisstillimportantbutinmostcountriesnowstoriesarewrittendownandpublishedinbooks.MyfavouritecollectionofshortstoriesisabookcalledTheStoryGiantbyBrianPatteninwhichagiantknowsallthestoriesintheworldexceptone.Ifhedoesn’tfindthelaststoryhe’lldie.Inthebookhegetsfourchildrenfromdifferentpartsoftheworldtotellhimstoriesinthehopethathewillfindthelaststorysohecanstayaliveandpasstheworld’sstoriesonforever.

9.SmokesettlesoverSouth-EastAsia

Peoplecouldonlyseeforabout50metresinpartsofBorneoyesterdayandSingaporerecordeditshighestpollutionfornearly10yearsasforestfiresinIndonesiasentsmokeacrosstheseatotherestofSouth-EastAsia.FacemaskshavebeengiventohundredsofthousandsofpeopleinMalaysia,andinmanyplaceschildrenstayedintheirhousesbehindcloseddoorsratherthanwalkthroughthesmoketogotoschool.Trafficstoppedbecausepeoplecouldnotseeoutoftheircarwindows,boatsstayedintheharbourandsomeairportsrefusedtoletaircraftland.

Itisunfortunate,butinSouthAfricawhereIlive,allofuswillbetouchedbycrimeatsomepointduringourlives.Somehowitaffectsallofourlives.Wehearaboutitthroughthemediaeveryday.Crimeisbecomingverydifficulttocontrol.

Abusinessmanonhiswayhomefromworkoneeveningwasonalonelystretchofroad.Suddenly,asiffromnowhere,heheardgunshots.Abulletwentthroughthewindscreenofhiscarandhithimintheheart.Hediedinstantly.Thepolicearrivedsoonafterwardsandbegansearchingforthekiller.Theyneverfoundhim.

Ayoungaccountantwasasleepinthebedroomofhishouseonenight,whenthievesbrokeintorobhim.Asheslept,theytookallofhispossessions,leavingbehindonlythethingsinthebedroomwherehewasasleep.Hewokeupthenextmorningandhishousewasempty!
