Itmovesforwardbecauseofyou.Itmovesforwardbecauseyoureaffirmedthespiritthathastriumphedoverwaranddepression,thespiritthathasliftedthiscountryfromthedepthsofdespairtothegreatheightsofhope,thebeliefthatwhileeachofuswillpursueourownindividualdreams,weareanAmericanfamily,andweriseorfalltogetherasonenationandasonepeople.(Cheers,applause.)

Tonight,inthiselection,you,theAmericanpeople,remindedusthatwhileourroadhasbeenhard,whileourjourneyhasbeenlong,wehavepickedourselvesup,wehavefoughtourwayback,andweknowinourheartsthatfortheUnitedStatesofAmerica,thebestisyettocome.

Iknowthatpoliticalcampaignscansometimesseemsmall,evensilly.Andthatprovidesplentyoffodderforthecynicswhotellusthatpoliticsisnothingmorethanacontestofegosorthedomainofspecialinterests.Butifyouevergetthechancetotalktofolkswhoturnedoutatourralliesandcrowdedalongaropelineinahighschoolgymor—orsawfolksworkinglateatacampaignofficeinsometinycountyfarawayfromhome,you’lldiscoversomethingelse.

You’llhearthedeterminationinthevoiceofayoungfieldorganizerwho’sworkinghiswaythroughcollegeandwantstomakesureeverychildhasthatsameopportunity.(Cheers,applause.)You’llheartheprideinthevoiceofavolunteerwho’sgoingdoortodoorbecauseherbrotherwasfinallyhiredwhenthelocalautoplantaddedanothershift.(Cheers,applause.)

You’llhearthedeeppatriotisminthevoiceofamilitaryspousewho’sworkingthephoneslateatnighttomakesurethatnoonewhofightsforthiscountryeverhastofightforajoboraroofovertheirheadwhentheycomehome.(Cheers,applause.)

That’swhywedothis.That’swhatpoliticscanbe.That’swhyelectionsmatter.It’snotsmall,it’sbig.It’simportant.Democracyinanationof300millioncanbenoisyandmessyandcomplicated.Wehaveourownopinions.Eachofushasdeeplyheldbeliefs.Andwhenwegothroughtoughtimes,whenwemakebigdecisionsasacountry,itnecessarilystirspassions,stirsupcontroversy.Thatwon’tchangeaftertonight.Anditshouldn’t.Theseargumentswehaveareamarkofourliberty,andwecanneverforgetthataswespeak,peopleindistantnationsareriskingtheirlivesrightnowjustforachancetoargueabouttheissuesthatmatter—(cheers,applause)—thechancetocasttheirballotslikewedidtoday.

Butdespiteallourdifferences,mostofussharecertainhopesforAmerica’sfuture.

Wewantourkidstogrowupinacountrywheretheyhaveaccesstothebestschoolsandthebestteachers—(cheers,applause)—acountrythatlivesuptoitslegacyasthegloballeaderintechnologyanddiscoveryandinnovation—(scatteredcheers,applause)—withallofthegoodjobsandnewbusinessesthatfollow.

WewantourchildrentoliveinanAmericathatisn’tburdenedbydebt,thatisn’tweakenedupbyinequality,thatisn’tthreatenedbythedestructivepowerofawarmingplanet.(Cheers,applause.)

Wewanttopassonacountrythat’ssafeandrespectedandadmiredaroundtheworld,anationthatisdefendedbythestrongestmilitaryonearthandthebesttroopsthis—thisworldhaseverknown—(cheers,applause)—butalsoacountrythatmoveswithconfidencebeyondthistimeofwartoshapeapeacethatisbuiltonthepromiseoffreedomanddignityforeveryhumanbeing.

WebelieveinagenerousAmerica,inacompassionateAmerica,inatolerantAmericaopentothedreamsofanimmigrant’sdaughterwhostudiesinourschoolsandpledgestoourflag—(cheers,applause)—totheyoungboyonthesouthsideofChicagowhoseesalifebeyondtheneareststreetcorner—(cheers,applause)—tothefurnitureworker’schildinNorthCarolinawhowantstobecomeadoctororascientist,anengineeroranentrepreneur,adiplomatorevenapresident.

That’sthe—(cheers,applause)—that’sthefuturewehopefor.

Now,wewilldisagree,sometimesfiercely,abouthowtogetthere.Asithasformorethantwocenturies,progresswillcomeinfitsandstarts.It’snotalwaysastraightline.It’snotalwaysasmoothpath.Byitself,therecognitionthatwehavecommonhopesanddreamswon’tendallthegridlock,resolveallourproblemsorsubstituteforthepainstakingworkofbuildingconsensusandmakingthedifficultcompromisesneededtomovethiscountryforward.

Butthatcommonbondiswherewemustbegin.Oureconomyisrecovering.Adecadeofwarisending.(Cheers,applause.)Alongcampaignisnowover.(Cheers,applause.)AndwhetherIearnedyourvoteornot,Ihavelistenedtoyou.Ihavelearnedfromyou.Andyou’vemademeabetterpresident.Andwithyourstoriesandyourstruggles,IreturntotheWhiteHousemoredeterminedandmoreinspiredthaneverabouttheworkthereistodoandthefuturethatliesahead.(Cheers,applause.)

Andinthecomingweeksandmonths,Iamlookingforwardtoreachingoutandworkingwithleadersofbothpartiestomeetthechallengeswecanonlysolvetogether—reducingourdeficit,reformingouttaxcode,fixingourimmigrationsystem,freeingourselvesfromforeignoil.We’vegotmoreworktodo.(Cheers,applause.)

Butthatdoesn’tmeanyourworkisdone.Theroleofcitizensinourdemocracydoesnotendwithyourvote.America’sneverbeenaboutwhatcanbedoneforus;it’saboutwhatcanbedonebyustogether,throughthehardandfrustratingbutnecessaryworkofself-government.(Cheers,applause.)That’stheprinciplewewerefoundedon.

Thiscountryhasmorewealththananynation,butthat’snotwhatmakesusrich.Wehavethemostpowerfulmilitaryinhistory,butthat’snotwhatmakesusstrong.Ouruniversity,ourculturearealltheenvyoftheworld,butthat’snotwhatkeepstheworldcomingtoourshores.WhatmakesAmericaexceptionalarethebondsthatholdtogetherthemostdiversenationonEarth,thebeliefthatourdestinyisshared—(cheers,applause)—thatthiscountryonlyworkswhenweacceptcertainobligationstooneanotherandtofuturegenerations,sothatthefreedomwhichsomanyAmericanshavefoughtforanddiedforcomewithresponsibilitiesaswellasrights,andamongthoseareloveandcharityanddutyandpatriotism.That’swhatmakesAmericagreat.(Cheers,applause.)
