Abstract:

ThethesisisastudyofsymbolisminthenovelTheRainbowwhichiswrittenbyD.H.Lawrence,themostfamouswriterin20thcentury.Literarysymbolismisaveryfamousandimportanttopicinliteraturestudy.

Thenovelisoneofhisclassicnovelswhicharefullofsymbols.Throughanalyzingthenovel,thechangeofideasonmoralvalues,love,andreligionshowsclearly.Throughthestudyofthechange,theconflictbetweentraditionallifeandnewlifebecauseoftheIndustrialRevolutionandthedevelopmentofthesocietyisexpressedclearlybyLawrence.Lawrenceisgoodatusingsymbolisminnovelcreating.Throughtheanalysisofthesymbolsinthenovel,aprofoundmeaningisdiscovered.ThestudyofsymbolismisalsoaverygoodwaytostudyotherworksofLawrenceandtheinfluencefromLawrence.

Introduction

DavidHerbertRichardsLawrence,bornon11September1885inEastwood,wasanEnglishnovelist,poet,playwright,essayistandliterarycritic.HeisthefourthchildofArthurJohnLawrence,whoisapoorminer.Heisatalentedwriter.Duringhis20yearsinliterarycreation,hewrotemorethantennovels,around800poems,threetraveloguesandsoon.AmonghisbestknownnovelsareSonsandLovers,TheRainbow,WomeninLoveandLadyChatterley'sLover.

TheRainbowwaswrittenin1915.ItismainlyastoryaboutthreegenerationsoftheBrangwenfamily.Histargetlinkedinthefamilialrelationshipsinthethreegenerations.ThestoryinthefirstgenerationisbetweenBrangwenandLydia.BrangwenisatraditionalBritishfarmerwho“hadnotthepowertocontroverteventhemoststupidargumentsothathewouldadmitthingsthathedidnotintheleastbelieve".Therewasnochangeinthevillageforcenturies.LydiaisaPolishwidowwithalittledaughter,Anna.Becauseofthecuriositytotheforeigncountry,Tomfellinlovewithher.ShemarriedBrangwenandbroughtherdaughterAnna.Atfirst,theyhadaveryhappylife.Astimegoesby,lovefadedaway.However,theconflictbasedondifferentculturebegantoshowup.ButfinallythemarriagechangedintoaveryplaintonealthoughBrangwenwantedtobedifferentbymarringaforeignlady.

ThesecondgenerationisAnnawhowasacharacterthroughoutthewholenovel.Anna'slovetiesinwiththecontinueddominanceofpatriarchalsysteminEnglishsocietyofthetime.Annawasagirlwholovedindependenceandfreedom.Shewantedtobecomeaproud,uncommonwomanwhenshegrewup.Shewasfullofrebelliontopurchaseherdreamsofbeingaproud,uncommonwoman.However,asthetimewentby,herdreamwentoutbecauseofthepowerfultraditionalcultureanddecrepitmainstreamthoughts.Thensheadjustedherdreamtoherparentsandfamily.ShefeltinlovewithhercousinWillandgotmarriedwithhim.WilliamBrangwenisTomBrangwen’snephew.HecomestoliveatMarshFarmwhileworkingatalocalfactoryWill’spassiveanddeferentialcharacteraretwoqualitiesthatsuitAnna.Heexpresseshisindividualityinhiswoodcarvingsandhisappreciationforchurcharchitectureandart.Aftergettingmarried,Anna’sdreamstoparentsandfamilyblewoutagain.WillandAnnahadtotallydifferentideastolifeandfaith.Willlikedrainbowsonthechurchdome.Heconsideredthatmorebeautifulthanotherrainbows.However,Annaconsideredtherainbowinnaturewasthemostbeautifulone.Willhadverytraditionalidealaboutmarriagewasforgivingbirth.ButAnnathoughtthatloveshouldbethebasisofmarriage.Aftersomequarrelsandconflictsbetweenthecouple,theybegantothinkwhatelseleftexceptsexbetweencouple.Whenthedreamwentout,AnnabecameatoolgivingbirthbabiesandWillchangedintoamanwhohadnootherideasexceptearningmoney.Theytriedtochangetheirlivesbutfailed.

Thethirdgeneration’srepresentisUrsulaBrangwen.Shewasfamiliarwithhermotherindreamsofindependentandfreelife.Buthercharactersonindependenceandfreedomweremuchstrongerthanhermother.Whenshewasalittlegirl,shewaslikehermotherwhowasrebellingtothetraditionallives.Butherideasaboutlifeweremorefantasticandhigherqualifiedthanhermother.Shehatedthenarrowroomandquarrelparents.Inthatcase,shedecidedtoleavehome.Shewantedtobeindependentpersonlikemen.Shestartedtoworkaftergraduationfrommiddleschool.Herideaaboutlifewasbeautifulbutalsobehitbycruelreality.Thefailureofherjobasatutorwasthefirsthitbyreality.Afterthatshedecidedtostudyincollege.Sheconsideredthatshewouldreachherideallifeincollege.However,herdreamwasshatteredagain.Afterthetwofailures,sheputherhopetoherboyfriendlikehermother.Butfinallyshebrokeupwithhim.Herdreamwentoutthirdly.Afterthethreetimesoffailures,shebecamematureandbegantounderstandtherealityofthesociety.Itwasjustalightringwhichcouldbeverybrightbylookingonthesurface.Exceptpartsofthecirclewasfullofdarknessandhopeless.

Thenovelisaboutfamilyrelationship.Thedescriptionofthenovelparticularlyfocusesontheemotionalandsexualdynamics.Becauseofthesexualdynamics,allcopiesofTheRainbowwereseizedandburnt.ThenovelwasnotallowedtobepublishedinBritainfor11years.

Symbolism,thatdoubleformofexpression,havinganativeandinnocentformforthelargerpublicandahiddenmeaningfortheintelligentinitiate,iswellknowntohavebeentheresourceofthemedievalfreethinkingteacherwhowasforcedtopickhiswaywiththeutmostcareamongtherocksoftheInquisition.Itlinkstwodifferentitemstogetherbyfreethinking.

InWinfried’sbooknamedHandbookofsemiotics,theauthorconsideredsymbolismisanindirectmeaningandanalogy.Jones’sdefinitionofsymbolismisstillwidelyaccepted,writesLegalin1991.Asymbolrepresentsthatthereisasymbolwherelanguageproducescompoundsignswhosemeaning,notcontentedwithdesignatingonething,designatesanothermeaningwhichcanonlyberealizedbyandfromitsowninternalorganizations[1].Symbolismisonekindofthewritingskills.Itindicatesthebeauty,andconveystheauthor’sthoughts,complicatedandsubtleemotionandfeelingscircuitouslythroughsymbols,hints,images,metaphor,associatefreeandthemusicalityofthelanguage.Therealityisdarkandvariable,illusoryandpainful.TheSymbolizationcanbeusedtohidetherealitybutleavinghintstoit.Inthatcase,theliteraturecannotleavethebasisofrealitybutalsokeepthebeautyofliterary.

ThereasononstudyingthenovelisjustthestudyingofLawrence’sSymbolism.TheRainbowisoneoftherepresentedworkstoD.H.Lawrencewhowashighlycontroversialin20thcentury.Lawrenceisfamousforpsychologicalanalysisandconflictsinindustrialsituation.Butmostoftimehedidnotspeakouthisideastraightly.Heusedalotofsymbolstoinstead.Asoneofhisrepresentedworks,therearealotofsymbolsusedinthenovel.Inthatcase,itisaverygoodchanneltostudyD.H.Lawrenceandhissymbolization.

Ⅰ.SymbolsofSocialConflictsandAnalysis

OneofthemostobviouscharactersofLawrence’sworksissymbolism.Hisworksarefullofsymbolswhicharedesignedinverycommonplots.D.H.Lawrence,whowasthefirsttopointoutthesomberstrangenessoftheseAmericanwritings,intheirownwayaspessimisticandmetaphysicalasthoseofVictorianEngland—turntothewordsymbolismtocharacterizeitsspirit.Thethemeisabouttheconflictsbroughtbyindustrialchanges.BecauseoftheIndustrialRevolutioninBritain,people’slivesbegantobechanged.ThenovelTheRainbowchoseavillagewhichwaschangedlittlebylittlebecauseoftheMinedevelopmentasthesceneforthestory.Therearealotofsymbolsinthisstoryaboutthetwoaspects.

1.1SymbolsofOldSocialLifestyle

Lawrencepaidalotofattentiontothechangeofpeople’slivesinindustrialdevelopment.Hisfatherwasaminerwhoknewnothingbutworking.Hismotherwasaladywhowaswell-educated.Lawrencegrewupinaveryunstablefamilyenvironmentwhichlethimthoughtalotaboutthetwodifferentclasses.Becauseoftheinfluencefromhisfamilyenvironment,Lawrencehadspecialsenseaboutlivesintheconflictofindustrydevelopmentandtraditionalsociety.

Inthenovel,thesymbolofthechurchisasymbolofGodandroyalty.Thereareseveralpartsmentioned.Atthebeginningofthenovel,thereisasimpledescriptionaboutthechurch:

“twomilesaway,achurch-towerstoodonahill,thehousesofthelittlecountrytownclimbingassiduouslyuptoit”.Itsymbolizesthetraditionallife.Highchurchtoweronthehighhillsymbolizesthehighsocialpositionoftraditionallife.Everyday,thosecommonpeoplewatchthechurchandpraytoit.“Heturnedagaintothehorizontalland,hewasawareofsomethingstandingabovehimandbeyondhiminthedistance”.FromthedescriptionofBrangwens’feelingonthechurch,theinfluenceoftraditionallifetothemisverydeeptoseveralgenerations.AndTomalso
