Recently,IwasmadekeenlyawareofthedifferentEnglishesIdouse.Iwasgivingatalktomanypeople,thesametalkIhadalreadygiventohalfadozenothergroups.Thenatureofthetalkwasaboutmywriting,mylife,andmybook,TheJoyLuckClub.ThetalkwasgoingalongwellenoughuntilIrememberedonemajordifferencethatmadethewholetalksoundwrong.Mymotherwasintheroom.Anditwasperhapsthefirsttimeshehadheardmegivealengthyspeech,usingthekindofEnglishIhaveneverusedwithher.Iwassayingthingslike,"theintersectionofmemoryuponimagination"——aspeechfilledwithalltheformsofstandardEnglishthatIhadlearnedinschool,theformsofEnglishIdidnotuseathomewithmymother. ①

thefactthatpeopleindepartmentstores,atbanks,andatrestaurantsdidnottakeherseriously,didnotgivehergoodservice,pretendednottounderstandher,orevenactedasiftheydidnothearher.

  WhenIwasfifteen,sheusedtohavemecallpeopleonthephonetopretendIwasshe.OnetimeIwasforcedtocallherstockbrokerinNewYorkandsayinanadolescentvoicethatwasnotveryconvincing,"ThisisMrs.Tan".Andmymotherwasstandinginthebackwhisperingloudly,"whyhedon'tsendmecheck,alreadytwoweekslate.Somadhelietome,losingmemoney".AndthenIsaidinperfectEnglishandgavehimwarnings.Thefollowingweektherewewereinfrontthisastonishedstockbroker,andIwassittingtherered’facedandquiet,andmymother,therealMrs.Tan,wasshoutingathisbossinherbrokenEnglish.

theEnglishIspoketomymother,whichforlackofbettertermmightbedescribedas"simple";theEnglishsheusedwithme,whichforlackofbettertermmightbedescribedas"broken";andwhatIimaginedtobehertranslationofherChineseifshecouldspeakinperfectEnglish,herinternallanguage,andforthatIsoughtpreservetheessence,butneitheranEnglishnoraChinesestructure.Iwantedtocapturewhatlanguageabilitytestscanneverreveal:

herintent,herpassion,herimaginary,therhythmsofherspeechandthenatureofherthoughts.
