Lyingintheheartofthecity,Foster’sbuildingisonthesiteofLondon’shistoricBalticExchangewhichwasseverelydamagedin1992.Constructedexactly100yearsbeforecompletionoftheGherkin,survivingpartsoftheBalticExchangebuildingweresoldandarebeingre-constructedinTallinn,thecapitaloftheBalticcountryEstonia.TheBalticExchange,whichtradesinthesaleofmerchantvesselsandtransportationofindustrialbulkcommoditiesandoriginatesbackto1744,wasstartedbyshipownersandbrokersmeetinginacoffeehouse.
