Inherearlypoetry,GwendolynBrookswroteabouttheSouthSideofChicago.TheSouthSideofChicagoiswheremanyblackpeoplelive.Inherpoems,theSouthSideiscalledBronzeville.It

was“AStreetinBronzeville”thatgainedtheattentionofliteraryexpertsin1945.Criticspraisedherpoeticskillandherpowerfuldescriptionsoftheblackexperienceduringthetime.The

Bronzevillepoemswereherfirstpublishedcollection.

In1950,GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforLiterature.Shewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalled“AnnieAllen.”“AnnieAllen”isa

collectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter,awifeandmother.Sheexperiencesloneliness,loss,deathandbeingpoor.Ms.Brookssaidthatwinningtheprize

changedherlife.

Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953called“MaudMartha.”“MaudMartha”receivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.

Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.
