Description

minicomisacommunicationprogramwhichsomewhatresemblesthesharewareprogramTELIXbutisfreewithsourcecodeandrunsundermostunices.Featuresincludedialingdirectorywithauto-redial,supportforUUCP-stylelockfilesonserialdevices,aseperatescriptlanguageinterpreter,capturetofile,multipleuserswithindividualconfigurations,andmore.

Command-line

Setup.Rooteditsthesystem-widedefaultsin/etc/minirc.dflwiththisoption.Whenitisused,minicomdoesnotinitialize,butputsyoudirectlyintotheconfigurationmenu.Thisisveryhandyifminicomrefusestostartupbecauseyoursystemhaschanged,orforthefirsttimeyourunminicom.Formostsystems,reasonabledefaultsarealreadycompiledin.

-o

Donotinitialize.Minicomwillskiptheinitializationcode.Thisoptionishandyifyouquittedfromminicomwithoutresetting,andthenwanttorestartasession.Itispotentiallydangerousthough:

nocheckforlockfilesetc.ismade,soanormalusercouldinterferewiththingslikeuucp...Maybethiswillbetakenoutlater.Fornowitisassumed,thatuserswhoaregivenaccesstoamodemareresponsibleenoughfortheiractions.

Overridecommand-keywiththeMetaorALTkey.Thisisthedefaultin1.80anditcanalsobeconfiguredinoneofminicom'smenus,butifyouusedifferentterminalsallthetime,ofwhichsomedon'thaveaMetaorALTkey,it'shandytosetthedefaultcommandkeytoCtrl-AandusethisoptionwhenyouhaveakeyboardsupportingMetaorALTkeys.MinicomassumesthatyourMetakeysendstheESCprefix,nottheothervariantthatsetsthehighestbitofthecharacter.

Sameas-m,butassumesthatyourMetakeysetsthe8thbitofthecharacterhigh（sends128+charactercode）.

Useterminalstatusline.Thisonlyworksonterminalsthatsupportitandthathavetherelevantinformationintheirtermcaporterminfodatabaseentry.

Literaltranslationofcharacterswiththehighbitset.Withthisflagon,minicomwillnottrytotranslatetheIBMlinecharacterstoASCII,butpassesthemstraighttrough.ManyPC-unixcloneswilldisplaythemcorrectlywithouttranslation（Linuxinaspecialmode,CoherentandSco）.

Attributeusage.Someterminals,notablytelevideo's,havearottenattributehandling（serialinsteadofparallel）.Bydefault,minicomuses'-aon',butifyouareusingsuchaterminalyoucan（must!

）supplytheoption'-aoff'.Thetrailing'on'or'off'isneeded.

Terminaltype.Withthisflag,youcanoverridetheenvironmentTERMvariable.ThisishandyforuseintheMINICOMenvironmentvariable;onecancreateaspecialtermcapentryforusewithminicomontheconsole,thatinitializesthescreentorawmodesothatinconjunctionwiththe-lflag,theIBMlinecharactersaredisplayeduntranslated.

Colorusage.Someterminals（suchastheLinuxconsole）supportcolorwiththestandardANSIescapesequences.Becausethereisapparentlynotermcapsupportforcolor,theseescapesequencesarehard-codedintominicom.Thereforethisoptionisoffbydefault.Youcanturnitonwith'-con'.This,andthe'-m'option,aregoodcandidatestoputintotheMINICOMenvironmentvariable.

script.Runthenamedscriptatstartup.Sofar,passingusernameandpasswordtoastartupscriptisnotsupported.Ifyoualsousethe-doptiontostartdialingatstartup,the-SscriptwillberunBEFOREdialingtheentriesspecifiedwith-d.

Dialanentryfromthedialingdirectoryonstartup.Youcanspecifyanindexnumber,butalsoasubstringofthenameoftheentry.Ifyouspecifyanamethathasmultipleentriesinthedirectory,theyarealltaggedfordialing.Youcanalsospecifymultiplenamesorindexnumbersbyseparatingthemwithcommas.Thedialingwillstartfromthefirstentryspecifiedafterallotherprograminitializationproceduresarecompleted.

Pseudoterminaltouse.Thisoverrridestheterminalportdefinedintheconfigurationfiles,butonlyifitisapseudotty.Thefilenamesuppliedmustbeoftheform（/dev/）tty[p-z/][0-f],（/dev/）pts[p-z/][0-f]or（/dev/）pty[p-z/][0-f].Forexample,/dev/ttyp1,pts/0or/dev/ptyp2.

configuration

Theconfigurationargumentismoreinteresting.Normally,minicomgetsitsdefaultsfromafilecalled"minirc.dfl".Ifyouhowevergiveanargumenttominicom,itwilltrytogetitsdefaultsfromafilecalled"minirc.configuration".Soitispossibletocreatemultipleconfigurationfiles,fordifferentports,differentusersetc.Mostsensibleistousedevicenames,suchastty1,tty64,sio2etc.Ifausercreateshisownconfigurationfile,itwillshowupinhishomedirectoryas'.minirc.dfl'.

Use

Minicomiswindowbased.Topopupawindowwiththefunctionyouwant,pressControl-A（fromnowon,wewilluseC-AtomeanControl-A）,andthenthefunctionkey（a-zorA-Z）.BypressingC-Afirstandthen'z',ahelpscreencomesupwithashortsummaryofallcommands.Thisescapekeycanbealteredwhenminicomisconfigured（-soptionorC-AO）,butwe'llsticktoControl-Afornow.

theupper24linesaretheterminal-emulatorscreen.Inthiswindow,ANSIorVT100escapesequencesareinterpreted.Ifthereisalineleftatthebottom,astatuslineisplacedthere.IfthisisnotpossiblethestatuslinewillbeshowedeverytimeyoupressC-A.Onterminalsthathaveaspecialstatuslinethatwillbeusedifthetermcapinformationiscompleteandthe-kflaghasbeengiven.

PressingC-AasecondtimewilljustsendaC-Atotheremotesystem.Ifyouhavechangedyour"escapecharacter"tosomethingotherthanC-A,thisworksanalogouslyforthatcharacter.
