Alaska has about 100 volcanoes, but it also has glaciers, giants pieces of ice that move slowly over land. Part IVYell

4、owstone National Park Would you like to see a cool hot spot? Visit Yellowstone National Park. Its in both Montana and Wyoming. Over 3 million people come to see its wonders every year. There are hot pools of bubbling mud, thousands of hot springs, and geysers like Old Faithful. It regularly shoots a

5、 blast of steaming hot water over 100 feet in the air!Part VThe Rocky Mountains Now, lets explore the Rocky Mountains, the biggest mountain range in North America. A range is a row or group of mountains. These towering snow-capped mountains stretch 3,000 miles from Alaska all the way to New Mexico.

6、Look at the map and you can see why the Rockies are called the backbone of America. The mountains form a line called the Continental Divide. On one side of the Divide, streams and rivers flow east to the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side, streams and rivers flow west to the Pacific Ocean.西部有很多种打招呼的方

13、icles or even helicopters! Ranching has changed from the old days. Part III Redmond, Washington, is home to the biggest personal computer software company in the world, Microsoft. Idaho is the number one state for growing potatoes. Boeing, the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, is one of Se

14、attles most important employers. Nevada is the fastest growing state. From 1990 to 2000, its population climbed from 1.2 to over 1.8 million. Eureka!Have you ever heard someone call out Eureka? Thats what people sometimes yell when they discover something very special-like gold. Someone must have ye

15、lled Eureka in Nevada because lots of gold has been discovered there.Gold is a very rare metal used for jewelry. Its beautiful and its very expensive, right? Did you know that gold is also used in many other things like computer, radios, and even space buggies? The United States is the second larges

16、t producer of gold in the world. Most of it comes from Nevada, the leading gold-producing state.Part IV Death valley in sunny southern California is trapped between two towering mountain ranges. Native Americans call this valley ground on fire. Thats a good name for a place that can reach over 115 d

17、egrees. On a summer day the air is usually around 100 degrees in the shade. To top it off, the average rainfall is less than two inches a year.You would think that nothing could live here, but thats not true. At night, when the temperature goes down, you can see coyotes, owls, and snakes. Burros hav

18、e been in Death Valley a long time. Burros are tough animals that can eat the thorny cactus that grow here. Long ago, priests and explorers from Spain brought burros to the Southwest, Burros ended up in Death Valley because gold prospectors used them as pack animals. There is a huge long valley in C

19、alifornia where more fruits, nuts, and vegetables grow than just anywhere else on planet Earth. Its called Central Valley because its the center of the state. Its about 450 miles long and 40 to 60 miles wide. Thats a bigger area than some states. Silicon Valley Have you ever heard of Silicon Valley?

20、 If not, dont look for it on a map because you may not find it there. Ask someone who lives in California and they will direct you to a cluster of towns with Spanish names like Santa Clara and San Jose. The old towns are high-tech today. Over one-third of everything California sells to other countri

21、es is produced in this little valley.The walk of fame Its too bright to see many stars in the sky, but you can see many stars in the sidewalk! This is the Walk of fame on Hollywood Boulevard, one of the most famous streets in the world. Look! Theres a star for Tom Hanks and another for Bill Cosby. T

22、his one is for the Simpsons! There are over 2,000 stars on this sidewalk. More are added every month. With its many big cities, including san Francisco, Los Angeles, and san Diego, California has the most people of any state. Part V Balto was the lead dog of a team that helped save the children of N

23、ome, Alaska. The children needed a medicine that was nearly 1,000 miles away in Anchorage. The only way to make the trip was by dogsled. So, as the world watched, more than 20 mushers and over 300 heroic dogs relayed the medicine for six days and nights. When Balto arrived, everyone knew that the ch

24、ildren were saved. There is a statue of him in faraway New York City. A movie was made about him, too. Here in Alaska a great race is run without cars or roads. It covers about 1,200 miles through forests, over mountains, and across frozen rivers. The temperature for the race can be as cold as 60 de

25、grees below zero! The race is called the Iditarod. Each racer travels with a sled pulled by a team of 12 to 18 dogs! A 50-pound dog can pull more than 800 pounds! In about 10 days, the winners will reach the finish line far away in Nome. It make take others 20 days or even longer to get there. Alask

26、an are proud of the mushers, their dogs, and what some call the Last Great race on earth. Part VI As you step off the plane, someone will greet you by saying aloha.
