Manypsychologistsdescribehappinessasastateofcomfortandease,feelinggoodinthemoment.Meaning,though,isdeeper.ThefamouspsychologistMartinSeligmansaysmeaningcomesfrombelongingtoandservingsomethingbeyondyourselfandfromdevelopingthebestwithinyou.Ourcultureisobsessedwithhappiness,butIcametoseethatseekingmeaningisthemorefulfillingpath.

Therearefourpillarsofameaningfullife.

Thefirstpillarisbelonging.Belongingcomesfrombeinginrelationshipswhereyou'revaluedforwhoyouareandwhereyouvalueothersaswell.Formanypeople,belongingisthemostessentialsourceofmeaning.

Forothers,thekeytomeaningisthesecondpillar:

purpose.Findingyourpurposeisnotthesamethingasfindingthatjobthatmakesyouhappy.Adoctortoldmeherpurposeishealingsickpeople.Manyparentstellme,“Mypurposeisraisingmychildren.”Thekeytopurposeisusingyourstrengthstoserveothers.Withoutsomethingworthwhiletodo,peopleflounder,thuslosingtheaimoflife.

Thethirdpillarofmeaningisalsoaboutsteppingbeyondyourself,butinacompletelydifferentway:

transcendence(超然).Transcendentexperiencescanchangeyou.Transcendentstatesarethoseraremomentswhenyou'reliftedabovethehustleandbustleofdailylife,yoursenseofselffadesaway,andyoufeelconnectedtoahigherreality.Forme,I’mawriter,andithappensthroughwriting.SometimesIgetsointhezonethatIloseallsenseoftimeandplace.

Thefourthpillarisstorytelling,thestoryyoutellyourselfaboutyourself.Creatinganarrativefromtheeventsofyourlifebringsclarity.Ithelpsyouunderstandhowyoubecameyou.Butwedon’talwaysrealizethatwe'retheauthorsofourstoriesandcanchangethewaywe’retellingthem.Yourlifeisn'tjustalistofevents.Youcanedit,interpretandretellyourstory,evenasyou'reconstrainedbythefacts.

That’sthepowerofmeaning.Happinesscomesandgoes.Butwhenlifeisreallygoodandwhenthingsarereallybad,havingmeaninggivesyousomethingtoholdonto.
