Littleton:

OnApril20th,1999,twoteenagestudentsopenedfireonclassmatesandteachersintheirsuburbanDenverschool,killing15peopleincludingthemselves.

Detroit:

OnDecember11th,1998,WayneStateUniversityprofessorwasshotandkilledwhilecollectingfinalexamsfromhisengineeringstudentswhenthegunmansteppedintotheclassroomandopenedfirewitharifle.Theprofessorfellwoundedtothefloor,onlytobeshotagainbythemanwhotookthetimetoreload.

Springfield:

OnMay21st,1998,afreshmanstudentopenedfirewithasemi-automaticrifleinahighschoolcafeteria,killingtwostudentsandwounding22others.Theteenager’sparentswerelaterfoundshottodeathintheirhome.

LosAngeles:

OnOctober11,1999,fivestudentswerefatallywoundedinaJewishcommunitycenter.

Thenewreportsaysthenumberofrobberiesnationwideincreasednineandseven-tenthspercentbetweenJanuaryandJuneofthisyear.Andthereweresevenpercentmorearsonfirescomparedtothefirsthalfoflastyear.Thenumberofmurdersincreasedalmostoneandone-halfpercent.Otherviolentoffenseswerealsoupmorethanonepercent.ButtheF.B.I.saysthenumberofrapesdecreased,thoughbylessthanone-tenthofonepercent.Thereportshowsthatviolentcrimerosenationwide,especiallyincitieswithpopulationsbetweenhalfamillionandamillion.ButthelargestincreasewasintheWest.Violentcrimeinthatpartofthecountryrosealmostfivepercent.Northeasternstateshadthesmallestincrease.Itwasthreepercentoverthesameperiodlastyear.Whileviolentcrimeincreasednationally,mostpropertycrimesfellinthefirsthalfoftheyear.Inall,propertycrimedecreasedmorethantwoandone-halfpercent.TheinformationintheF.B.I.reportcomesfrommorethaneleventhousandlawenforcementagencies.

ResearchersfromtheJusticeDepartmentarestudyinganumberofcitiestolookforreasonswhyviolentcrimeisupnationally.Expertssuggestanumberofpossiblereasons.TheseincludetoomanyillegalgunsandnotenoughlawenforcementofficersonthestreetsofAmericancities.Alsoblamedarereductionsinfederalmoneyforlocallawenforcementagenciesoverthepasttenyears.YetlocalagencieshavemoredutiessincetheattacksofSeptember11th,2001.Nowtheyareexpectedtofightterrorisminadditiontotraditionalcrime.Atthefederallevel,theF.B.I.andotheragenciesthatoftenhelplocalofficersinvestigatecrimeshaveseentheirdutieschangeaswell.

Butotherresearchersbelieveanincreaseinyoungmalesandotherpopulationchangeshaveplayedapartintheriseinviolentcrime.Andsomepointtoincreasesinthespreadofstreetgangs.Inanycase,theF.B.I.notesthatintheyearsleadingupto2005,violentcrimekeptfalling.Soofficialssayitisstilltooearlytosayifnewtrendsaredeveloping.
