MountVesuviusismostfamousforitslandmarkeruptionintheyear79AD,whichburiedthecitiesofPompeiiandHerculaneuminlayersofburningash.TheonlyaccountoftheeruptionthatsurvivesisfromPlinytheYounger.Fromhisdramaticaccount,scientistsbelievethecloudofashhewitnessedthatdescendeduponPompeiiwastwentymileshigh.ThecityofPompeiiwascompletelyburied.Itwasrediscoveredin1748,morethan1600yearsaftertheeruption.ThepeopleofPompeiiwerefoundburiedunder12layersofsoil.Manyofthebuildingswereamazinglywell-preserved,aswerethebodiesofthosewhowerejustgoingabouttheirdailyroutineswhentheeruptionoccurred.TheruinsatPompeiihaveprovidedarchaeologistswithvaluableinformationabouthowpeopleintheRomanEmpirelived.Today,PompeiiisoneofthemostvisitedsitesinItaly.
