TounderstandthefeaturesinWindowsServicesforUNIX,considertheWebexperienceofLitware,afictionalsmall-to-medium-sizedcompany.WhatstartedthreeyearsagoasafewstaticWebpagesmanagedbyapart-timewebmasteronasingleUNIXmachineturnedintoalarge,dynamicsitewithafull-timeUNIXadministrator,astagingWebserver,a“live”Webserver,andaUNIX-basedproxyserverforsecuredInternetaccessfortheWebdevelopers.
Litware’sfounderandpresidentKathrynWilsonhasmandatedthatLitware’sInternetsitebecomeacentralfocusforallofLitware’sdepartments.AllofLitware’sdepartmentsareresponsiblefordevelopingandpostingtheircontenttotheInternetstagingsite.Inaddition,allofLitware’s500usersmusthaveInternetaccessthroughtheUNIX-basedproxyserver.
AsamemberofLitware’sthree-personISDepartment,youneedto:

ThesetasksposeachallengeforLitwarebecausetheISDepartmenthasnoUNIXexperience.Thefull-timeUNIXadministratorhasnoWindowsexperience,andissobusywiththeInternetsitetohelpthemwithintegratingtheinternalnetworkwiththeUNIXsystems.SomehowyouhavetobridgetheWindows-UNIXdividewithnoin-house,cross-platformexpertise.
Fortunately,Microsoftprovidestoolstohelpbridgethisdivide.MicrosoftiscommittedtoUNIXinteroperabilityandhasprovidedanumberoftoolstoallowadministratorsofWindows-basednetworkstooperatewithUNIXsystemswithouthavingtoknowUNIX.AsweexaminehowLitwaresolvesthesecommonproblems,wewillseehowyoucanusesomeofthetoolsthatMicrosoftprovidestosolveyourownreal-worldprobleminintegratingwithUNIX.

2.ClickStart,pointtoSettings,pointtoNetworkandDialupConnections,andclicktheLANconnection.
3.OntheStatusdialog,clickPropertiestoseethenetworkproperties.
4.ClickInstall.
5.ClickProtocolandchooseAdd.
6.Fromthelistofavailableprotocols,selectInternetProtocolandclickOKasshownbelow.
7.IfyouneedtochangethedefaultTCP/IPproperties,selectInternetProtocolinthelistofcomponentsandclickProperties.
8.Whenyouhavefinished,clickOKtoclosethenetworkpropertiesdialog.Youmaybepromptedtorestartyourcomputer.TCP/IPisnowinstalled.

21.ReadtheEnd-UserLicenseagreementthoroughly.Whenyouarefinished,click“Iacceptthetermsofthelicenseagreement”ifyouacceptandclickNext.

Overview
WhiledevelopingcontentfortheInternetsite,youruserswillsometimeswanttoconnecttoUNIXvolumesusingafamiliardrag-and-dropinterface.Historically,thedivisionbetweentheUNIXandWindowsspacehasalsomadefilesharingoneofthemostdifficultrequirementstoaddress.IntheUNIXspace,NetworkFileSystem(NFS)isthemostcommon(thoughnottheonly)meansbywhichdataissharedonUNIXnetworks.IntheWindowsspace,ServerMessageBlock(SMB)isthemostcommonmeanstoaccessWindows-basedresources.
InconnectingWindowsandUNIXsystemsforfileaccess,youhavetwochoices:
