TaiYuan

Taiyuan,thecapitalofShanxiProvinceisanancientcitywithahistoryof2500years.Itwasinitiallyestablishedin497B.C.intheSpringandAutumnPeriod（770—475B.C.）,calledasJinyangcity.Inthehistoryofmorethan2,000years,TaiyuanhasalwaysbeenamilitaryfortresstowninNorthernChina,enjoyingthereputationof"controllingmountainsandrivers,crouchingonheaven'sshoulderandback".LaterintheperiodoftheRepublicofChina（1912-1949）,TaiyuanwasthemunicipalityunderthedirectjurisdictionofShanxiMunicipalGovernment.

TaiYuanislocatedinthemiddlereachesoftheYellowRiverinNorthChinaandissurroundedbyhillsinitswest,northandeast.Itcoversanareaofapproximately6,998sqkm.TheFenHeRiver,akeytributaryoftheYellowRiver,runsthroughthecitywithadistanceofapproximately100km.TaiYuanliesinthevalleybasinofbothmountainsoftheTaiHangMountainineastandtheLuLiangMountaininwest.

Thecityhadapopulationof[3.4138]millionattheendof[2004].Nowitgovernsonecity,sixdistrictsandthreecounties,with51subdistrictoffices,488urbancommunityresidentcommissions,54town-ships,1030ruralresidentcommissionsand1794villages.

IntheearlyfoundingofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,TaiYuanwasanindustrialbase.Aftermorethan50years,ithasbeenbuilttopossessacompleteindustrialsystemwithvariousofindustriesasthepillarsofenergy,metallurgy,machineryandchemical,andotherindustriesastextile,lightindustry,medicine,electronics,food,buildingmaterials,preciseinstruments,etc.TheeconomyinTaiYuanCityisdevelopingrapidly.Taiyuanisrichinmineralresources,withvariousvarietiesofminerals.Themetalmineralresourcesmainlyincludeiron,manganese,copper,leadandaluminium,etc.Thenon-metalmineralresourcesincludecoal,gypsum,sulphur,vanadium,nitric,clay,quartz,limestoneanddolomite,etc.Majoritiesofthemineralresourcesarecoal,ironandgypsum.Taiyuanhasprovedtheabundantreservesofrawcoal,withacompletevarietyofcoal.Ironoreresourcesarewidelydistributedintheregion,withafairabundanceofreserve.Itsgypsumenjoysahighreputationinmarketforitsexcellentquality.

XiaodianDistrict（小店区）

XiaodianDistrictislocatedinthesoutheastoftheurbanareaofTaiyuan,whichservesasthegatewaytoTaiyuanandcoversatotalareaof295sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpermanentpopulationof[372,000]people,ofwhichthenon-agriculturalpopulation[232,000]peoplein2006.XiaodianDistrictservesasthemajorgatewayprovincialcapital,strategiclocationandconvenienttransportation.Therearestate-levelHigh-TechIndustrialDevelopmentZones（国家级太原高新技术开发区）andTaiyuanEconomicTechnicalDevelopmentZone（太原经济技术开发区）.XiaodianDistrictisalsoimportantagriculturalproductionbaseinTaiyuan.

YingzeDistrict（迎泽区）

YingzeDistrictislocatedinthecentralofTaiyuanurbanareaandcoversatotalareaof104.55sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpermanentpopulationof[464,300]people,ofwhichhas[431,600]urbanpopulationand[32,700]ruralpeoplein2006.YingzeDistrictisalsoknownasthe“OldCity”isthecapital'stransportationhubanddiplomatic"window",itisrichinsocialandculturalresources,deephistoricalrootsanditisthemostestablishedretailareaofTaiyuan.

WanbailinDistrict（万柏林区）

WanbailinDistrictislocatedinthewestoftheurbanareaandcoversatotalareaof304.8sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpermanentpopulationof[485,400]people,ofwhichthenon-agriculturalpopulation[417,200]people,agriculturalpopulationof[68,200]peoplein2006.WanbailinDistrictisatypicalenergyandheavychemicalindustryarea,coal,beverages,chemicals,machinerymanufacturingasitspillarindustries.ManywholesalemarketsarelocatedinWanbailinDistrict,varyingfrombuildingmaterialstohouseholdelectronicsandvegetables.WanbailinDistrictisrichingeothermalwatersources.

XinghualingDistrict（杏花岭）

XinghualingDistrictislocatedinthenortheastoftheurbanareaandcoversatotalareaof170.2sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpermanentpopulationof[520,700]people.XinghualingDistrictisthepoliticalcenterofTaiyuan,theShanxiprovincialgovernment,theCPPCCProvincialCommittee,theProvincialMilitaryRegion,TaiyuanMunicipalCommittee,governmentandotherprovincesandmunicipalitiesparty,governmentandmilitaryorganizationsarelocatedinthisdistrict.

JiancaopingDistrict（尖草坪区）

JiancaopingDistrictislocatedinthenorthernpartoftheurbanarea,dividedbytheFenheRiverandcoversatotallandareaof285.6sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpermanentpopulationof[345,000]persons,amongthemagriculturalpopulation[246,600]persons,agriculturalpopulation[98,400]persons.Economicallybasedonfourmainfourpillarindustryconsistsofstainlesssteel,ore/metalsmelting,gypsumbuildingmaterialsandpetrol-chemicalrefining,JiancaopingDistricthasconstructedtheabundantindustryfoundation.

JinyuanDistrict（晋源区）

JinyuanDistrictislocatedinthesouthwestoftheurbanareaofTaiyuanandcoversatotalareaof288sqkm.Ithasaregisteredpopulationof176,300,ofwhichthenon-agriculturalpopulationaccountedfor[64,100]whiletheagriculturalpopulationaccountedfor112,200.Ithasanarablelandof8,312hectarewithgoodirrigationconditions,thecapitalhasbecomeamajoragriculturalproductionbase.Themaincropsarerice,wheat,maize,sorghum,beansandpotatoes.JinyuanDistricthasalonghistoryandbrilliantculture,andtourismisafeatureofthenewdistrict.

EconomyOverview

TaiyuanGrossDomesticProduct

Taiyuan’seconomyhasexperiencedouble-digitgrowthsince2003.TheGDPwas[RMB101.3]billionin2006,up[13.5%]y-o-y.Theannualgrowthratewasadouble-digitgrowthinrealtermsinsixconsecutiveyearsexceptinyear2003.Alongwiththat,theGDPpercapitahasalsogrownrapidlyfrom2003to2006.Itwas[RMB29,497]in2006,representingay-o-ygrowthof[12.7%].

PerCapitaDisposableIncome

ThepercapitadisposableincomeofTaiyuanhasincreasednotablybetween2001and2006.Itreached[RMB11,741]in2006,representingay-o-ygrowthof[13.2%]innominalterms,or[12.2%]inrealterms.

GDPComposition

Thetertiaryindustryshared[51.2%],thehighestportioninGDP,in2006,whileonly[1.9%]and[46.9%]ofGDPweresharedbyprimaryandsecondaryindustriesrespectively.IthighlightedthatTaiyuanbecameawell-urbanizedeconomy.

Inmonetaryterms,thetertiaryindustrycontributedRMB[51.8]billion*forTaiyuan’sGDP,growingby[16.5%].ThesecondaryindustrycontributedRMB[47.5]billion*,showinganincreaseof[10.4%].TheprimaryindustrycontributedRMB[1.9]billion*,remainingrelativelystablewithaslightannualdecreaseof[-2.9%].

ImportsandExports

In2006,Taiyuanimportsandexportsachieved[USD41.1billion],upby[21.9%]y-o-y.Inaddition,thetotalexportwas[USD24.2]billion,growingby[14.5%],whilethetotalimportwas[USD16.8]billion,showinganincreaseof[34.3%].

RealEstateInvestment

Taiyuan’seconomicgrowthfrom2001onwardshasstimulatedtherealestatemarket.From2001to2006,Taiyuan’sGDPhasmaintainedadouble-digitgrowthrate.Therewassignificantgrowthintherealestateinvestmentalongwiththerobusteconomy.Thetotalinvestmentinrealestatedevelopmenthasbeengrowingrapidlyduringtheperiod.In2006,itwas[RMB8.032billion],morethantripledthatof[2001].

AreaunderConstruction

Between[2002]and[2005],theresidentialareaunderconstructioninTaiyuanincreasedsteadily.In[2006],theareaunderconstructionofTaiyuan’sresidentialmarketreached[5.6]millionsqm,anincreaseof[35.0%]y-o-y,comparedwith[2005].Between[2002]and[2005],theannualaveragegrowthwashigherthan[13.9%],showingasteadilyincreasingtrendoverthepast[five]years.
