Heorsheisrestless,moody,depressed,orirritablewhenattemptingtocutdownorstopInternetuse。

Heorsherepeatedlystaysonlinelongerthanheorsheoriginallyintended。

Thepersonmustmeetatleastoneofthefollowingcriteria:

Heorshehasjeopardizedorriskedthelossofasignificantrelationship,job,educationalorcareeropportunitybecauseofInternetuse。

Heorshehasliedtofamilymembers,atherapist,orotherstoconcealtheextentofinvolvementwiththeInternet。

HeorsheusestheInternetasawayofescapingfromproblemsorofrelievinganunpleasantmood(suchasfeelingsofhelplessness,guilt,anxiety,ordepression)。

Prognosis

Althoughextensivestudieshavenotyetbeendone,treatmentappearstobeeffectiveinmaintainingandchangingthebehaviorofpeopledrawntoexcessiveuseoftheInternet。

Ifthedisorderisleftuntreated,thepersonmayexperienceanincreasedamountofconflictinhisorherrelationships。

ExcessiveInternetusemayjeopardizeaperson"semploymentoracademicstanding。

Inaddition,suchphysicalproblemsmaydevelopasfatigue,carpaltunnelsyndrome,backpain,andeyestrain。
