Apapaldecreeof1493hadassignedalllandintheNewWorldwestof50degreesWlongitudetoSpainandallthelandeastofthatlinetoPortugal.MagellanofferedtoprovethattheEastIndiesfellunderSpanishauthority.OnSeptember20,1519,MagellansetsailfromSpainwithfiveships.Morethanayearlater,oneoftheseshipswasexploringthetopographyofSouthAmericainsearchofawaterrouteacrossthecontinent.Thisshipsank,buttheremainingfourshipssearchedalongthesouthernpeninsulaofSouthAmerica.Finallytheyfoundthepassagetheysoughtnearalatitudeof50degreesS.MagellannamedthispassagetheStraitofAllSaints,buttodayweknowitastheStraitofMagellan.
OneshipdesertedwhileinthispassageandreturnedtoSpain,sofewersailorswereprivilegedtogazeatthatfirstpanoramaofthePacificOcean.ThosewhoremainedcrossedthemeridianwenowcalltheInternationalDateLineintheearlyspringof1521afterninety-eightdaysonthePacificOcean.Duringthoselongdaysatsea,manyofMagellan’smendiedofstarvationanddisease.
LaterMagellanbecameinvolvedinaninsularconflictinthePhilippinesandwaskilledinatribalbattle.OnlyoneshipandseventeensailorsunderthecommandoftheBasquenavigatorElcanosurvivedtocompletethewestwardjourneytoSpainandthusproveonceandforallthattheworldisround,withnoprecipiceattheedge.

MarieCuriewasoneofthemostaccomplishedscientistsinhistory.Togetherwithherhusband,Pierre,shediscoveredradium,anelementwidelyusedfortreatingcancer,andstudieduraniumandotherradioactivesubstances.PierreandMarie’samicablecollaborationlaterhelpedtounlockthesecretsoftheatom.
Mariewasbornin1867inWarsaw,Poland,whereherfatherwasaprofessorofphysics.Attheearlyage,shedisplayedabrilliantmindandablithepersonality.Hergreatexuberanceforlearningpromptedhertocontinuewithherstudiesafterhighschool.Shebecamedisgruntled,however,whenshelearnedthattheuniversityinWarsawwasclosedtowomen.Determinedtoreceiveahighereducation,shedefiantlyleftPolandandin1891enteredtheSorbonne,aFrenchuniversity,wheresheearnedhermaster’sdegreeanddoctorateinphysics.
MariewasfortunatetohavestudiedattheSorbonnewithsomeofthegreatestscientistsofherday,oneofwhomwasPierreCurie.MarieandPierreweremarriedin1895andspentmanyproductiveyearsworkingtogetherinthephysicslaboratory.Ashorttimeaftertheydiscoveredradium,Pierrewaskilledbyahorse-drawnwagonin1906.Mariewasstunnedbythishorriblemisfortuneandenduredheartbreakinganguish.Despondentlysherecalledtheircloserelationshipandthejoythattheyhadsharedinscientificresearch.Thefactthatshehadtwoyoungdaughterstoraisebyherselfgreatlyincreasedherdistress.
Curie’sfeelingofdesolationfinallybegantofadewhenshewasaskedtosucceedherhusbandasaphysicsprofessorattheSorbonne.Shewasthefirstwomantobegivenaprofessorshipattheworld-famousuniversity.In1911shereceivedtheNobelPrizeinchemistryforisolatingradium.AlthoughMarieCurieeventuallysufferedafatalillnessfromherlongexposuretoradium,sheneverbecamedisillusionedaboutherwork.Regardlessoftheconsequences,shehaddedicatedherselftoscienceandtorevealingthemysteriesofthephysicalworld.
