TheBaselNetworkalsosaysitwonassurancesfrom13organizations,includingSamsung,BankofAmerica,WellsFar-go,thatthey’llusee-Stewardrecyclerswheneverpossible.WellsFargohadalreadybeenusingrecyclerswhodeclarednottoexport.Sofar,Baselhascertifiedthreerecyclersandsevensites.

Beforee-stewards,even,companiesthatwantedtoavoidexportofelectronicwastehadto“hopeforthebest”,when,theyhandedtheirwastetorecyclers,saysRobertHoughton,presidentofOhio-basedrecyclerRedemtech.Itisane-Stewardthatcountsmajorcompaniesamongitscustomers.“Now,theycangetsomeproof,”Houghtonsays.

Basel’sstandardscompetewithanothersetlaunchedinJanuary.ItwasmadebyindustryandbackedbytheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency.
