Americansthisyearwillswallow15,000tonsofaspirin,oneofthesafestandmosteffectivedrugsinventedbyman.Asthemostpopularmedicineintheworldtoday,itisaneffectivepainreliever.Itsbadeffectsarerelativelymild,anditischeap.

AlthoughaspirinwasfirstsoldbyaGermancompanyin1899,ithasbeenaroundmuchlongerthanthat.Hippocrates,inancientGreece,understoodthemedicalvalueoftheleavesandtreebarkwhichtodayareknowntocontainsalicylates,thechemicalinaspirin.Duringthe19thcenturytherewasagreatdealofexperimentationinEuropewiththischemical,anditledtotheintroductionofaspirin.By19l5,aspirintablets(片剂)wereavailableintheUnitedStates.
