Yorkshire,Englandwasthesettingfortwogreatnovels（小说）ofthe19thcentury.ThesewereCharlotteBronte'sJaneEyreandEmilyBronte'sWutheringHeights.Theyoungestsister,Anne,wasalsoagiftednovelist,andherbookshavethesameextraordinaryqualityashersisters'.
TheirfatherwasPatrickBronte,borninIreland.Hemovedwithhiswife,MariaBronte,andtheirsixsmallchildrentoHaworthinYorkshirein1820.Soonafter,Mrs.Bronteandthetwoeldestchildrendied,leavingthefathertocarefortheremainingthreegirlsandaboy.
Charlottewasbornin1816,Emilywasbornin1818andAnnein1820.TheirbrotherBranwellwasbornin1817.Lefttothemselves,thechildrenwroteandtoldstoriesandwalkedoverthehills.Theygrewuplargelyselfeducated.Branwellshowedagreatinterestindrawing.Thegirlsweredeterminedtoearnmoneyforhisarteducation.Theytookpositionsasteachersortaughtchildrenintheirhomes.
