Abstract

Nowadaysmovieisoneofthemostinfluentialmassmedia.WiththesuccessofChina’sreformandopening-uppolicyandthestrengthenedeconomicandculturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandEnglish-speakingcountries,wehaveseenalargeflowofEnglishmoviesintoChinesemoviemarketrecentyears.EnglishmoviesarecontinuouslytranslatedtomeetChineseaudience’sgrowingneeds.Movietitlesbearthegreattaskofhelpingpeopleunderstandthefilmandlearningthecultureofadifferentarea.AsthetitlesoftheEnglishmoviesalwayscarryspecialculturalsenses,whentheyaretranslatedintoChinese,manyfactorsshouldbeconsideredanddifferentmethodsoftranslationshouldbetakenaccordingly.ThepaperanalyzesthetranslationofEnglishmovietitlesfromtheperspectiveofforeignizationanddomesticationtohelppeopletounderstandthemeaningandconnotationofcultureinthemovie.

摘要

现今，电影已成为了最具影响力的大众传媒之一。

随着改革开放的步伐推进，中国的经济实力加强，中西文化的交流加深，近年来大量的国外英语影片进入了中国的市场。

为了满足中国电影观众的要求，国外英语电影不断地翻译成中文版。

电影片名肩负着帮助中国电影观众理解电影及中西文化差异的责任。

大多数英语电影片名总是蕴含着特殊的意义，所以当人们要翻译它时，总是需要考虑许多因素和方法。

本文将从异化与归化的角度分析英语电影的翻译，使人们能更好的了解电影的文化意义。

I.Introduction

WithChina’spolicyofreformandopening-uptotheoutsideworldanditsentryintoWTOandthestrengtheningprocessofglobalization,communicationamongnationsisbecomingmoreandmorefrequent,inwhichculturalexchangeisanimportantpart.Asanimportantmeansofculturalcommunication,filmsplayaveryimportantpart.Theyarealsooneofthemostimportantelementsintheworld’sculturalcommunication,whichcanberegardedasaneffectivewayofpromotingmutualunderstandingbetweendifferentcounties.Inrecentyears,moviehasgraduallybecomeanindustry.Inthewesternworld,ablockbustermayhitaboxofficerecordover100millionorevenmore.WiththeculturalexchangebetweenChinaandwesterncountries,moreandmorewesternmovieshavecomeintoChinesemarket.Themovietitleisthefirstpartthroughwhichtheaudiencecanknowaboutthemovie,sothetranslationofwesternmovietitlesisprettyimportant.Agoodtranslationofthetitlecanconveytheinformationofthemovieandattracttheaudience’sdesireofgoingtothemovie.Sincefilmtitleshavealwaysbeenputinaneye-catchingplace,thetranslationofEnglishfilmtitlesbecomesmoresignificant.

Asabranchofnon-literarytranslation,thetranslationofEnglishmovietitles,likemanyotherformsofnon-literarytranslation,hasnotyetreceiveddueattentiondespitetheirimportance.Somemistranslationwillgivefalseinformationandaffectaudiencetoenjoymovies,sousingpropertranslationskillsisquitenecessary.Thispaper,basedonananalysisofthecharacteristicsandmethodsofEnglishmovietitles,willintroducedomesticationandforeignizationofEnglishmovietitletranslation.

Inordertohelppeopletounderstandthemeaningandconnotationofcultureinthemovie,weneedtoknowthefeaturesoffilmtitles.

1.1LinguisticFeatures

Generallyspeaking,asfarasthelinguisticstructureisconcerned,Englishfilmtitlesareusuallyveryshort,concisesothattheywillbeeasytoreadandtorememberbytheaudience.Intheviewoftheform,theyemployoneortwowordswhichmaybethenameofheroorheroine,theplaceorthekeyyearthestorytakenplace,forinstance,Ali《拳王阿里》,Parrton《巴顿将军》andsoon.However,inmostcases,theyadoptvariouskindsofphrasesastitles,namely,nounphrases,verbphrases,adjectivephrases,adverbphrasesandprepositionalphrases.ExamplesareOnGoldenPond《金色池塘》,OutofAfrica《走出非洲》,DancewithWolves《与狼共舞》,Faceoff《变脸》arealltitlesofthiskind.

1.2AestheticFeatures

Generallyspeaking,theaestheticcharacteristicsofEnglishfilmtitlesarecloselyrelatedtotheapplicationofrhetoricaldevices,suchassimile,metaphor,irony,personification,alliteration,etc.Theapplicationofrhetoricdevicestofilmtitlehasbeenprovedeffectiveandpowerful.Eachfigurehasitsowncharacteristicanditsownwayofachievingcertaineffect,eithertoenlightentheunderstanding,toarousetheimaginationortomovethepassion.Forexample,DancewithWolves（personification）,PrideandPrejudice（alliteration）,Tiger!

Languagedoesnotexistindependentlyandiscloselyrelatedtoculture.“Languagehasacultural,notabiologicallyinheritedfunction,changesincultureoftengiverisetonewtypesofdiscourse”[2].Allgoodfilmsaresocialproductsofculturalfactorsandideologicaltrendsofcertaineras.Mostly,theculturalfeaturesofEnglishfilmtitlesarecloselyrelatedtothequotationofallusionswhichconveyrichculturalmeanings.Forexample,Adam’sRid,Seven,SilenceoftheLamb,OriginalSin,andsoon.

2.1StatusQuooftheTranslationofFilmTitlesintheChina

InChina,somescholarsresearchthetranslationofmovietitlesfromtheperspectiveofcultureathomeandabroad.TheyarefullyawareoftheculturaldifferencesbetweenChinaandwesterncountries.ItincludesFilmTitlesandTheirTranslation—ACross–culturalPerspectivewrittenbyZhangYuanandACulturalStudyontheTranslationofEnglishFilmTitlewrittenbyLiYan.Somescholarsstudythetranslationofmoviestitlesfromtheperspectiveofmoviestyles,suchasMethodsofEnglishMovieTitlesTranslationwrittenbyZhangXiaoliang.Theythinkitisimportanttoconsiderwhichstylethefilmis,suchasromantic,breathtaking,terror,martialarts,orsciencefiction.Somescholarsconsiderthatthetranslationshouldbestudiedfromtheperspectiveofadvertisingfactors.Theythinkthatwiththedevelopmentofeconomy,thefilm'

seconomicfactorsaregraduallydeepeninginthetranslationofmoviestitlesandtheconsiderationofadvertisingfactorsisinevitable.ItincludesThecombinationofartandcommercial--EnglishtranslationoffilmtitleswrittenbyLiNanFang.

2.2DifferentTranslatedNamesofEnglishFilmsonthePosterAdvertisingandMedia

Duetothehistoricalandsocialreasons,educationallevel,knowledgestructureandculturalbackground,thesamefilmtitlehasdifferenttranslatedversions,andthetranslationchaoticphenomenaareveryprominent.Forexample,anAmericanfilmGhostistranslatedinto《幽灵》or《灵魂》intheChinesemainland,《人鬼情未了》inHongKong,and《第六生死恋》inTaiWan.AnotherfilmPrettyWomenistranslatedinto《漂亮女人》intheChinesemainland,《风月俏佳人》inHongKong,《麻雀变凤凰》inTaiWan.

AsthetitlesoftheEnglishmoviesalwayscarryspecialculturalsenses,whentheyaretranslatedintoChinese,manyfactorsshouldbeconsideredanddifferentmethodsoftranslationshouldbetakenaccordingly.ThepaperwillanalyzethetranslationofEnglishmovietitlesfromtheperspectiveofforeignizationanddomesticationtohelppeopletounderstandthemeaningandconnotationofcultureinthemovie.

III.ForeignizationandDomestication

TranslationdoesnotonlyinvolvegivingtheequivalentmeaningintheTargetLanguage（TL）,ratheritinvolvesconsideringthevaluesoftheTLandtheSourceLanguage（SL）whethertheyarelinguisticvaluesorculturalones.SometranslatorspreferchangingtheSLvaluesandmakingthemreadablefortheTLaudience.ThisistermedDomestication.Others,ontheotherhand,preferkeepingthevaluesoftheSLandexposingaudiencetothem.ThisistermedForeignization.

Whatarethemeaningsofdomesticationandforeignization?

Domesticationreferstothetarget-culture-orientedtranslationinwhichunusualexpressionstothetargetcultureareexploitedandturnedintosomefamiliaronessoastomakethetranslatedtextintelligibleandeasyforthetargetreaders.
