Althoughstillsickly,Nobeltookchargeofthefamilybusiness.In1863hereturnedtoSwedenandsetupasmallfactorytomakenitroglycerin.Ayearlateraterrificexplosiondestroyedtheplantandkilledfivepeople.Onewashisyoungestbrother,Emil.Nobel,however,refusedtogiveuphisworkandmovedtheplanttoabargemooredinalake.Furthertragediesoccurred.In1866,afterdisastrousexplosionsatworldports,manynationsforbadetheirvesselstocarrynitroglycerin.Nobelthensoughttomaketheexplosivesafertohandle.Hefoundtheanswerindynamite.

TheinventionmadeNobelwealthy.HespentthenexttenyearssettingupplantsintheUnitedStatesandEurope.In1876hepatentedblastinggelatin,acombinationofguncottonandnitroglycerin.In1878heandhisbrothersdevelopedoilfieldsinRussia.Heinventedballistitein(导弹)in1888,oneofthefirstsmokelesspowders.

Nobelnevermarried.Hefoundrecreationinhislaboratoryandinwritingpoetryinimitationofhisidol,PercyByssheShelley.InlateryearshetraveledthroughoutEuropeandhadhomesinParis,inStockholm,andinSanDemo,Italy.In1876hemetBerthaKinsky,aBohemiannoblewoman.InletterstoNobeloverseveralyearsshedevelopedhisideasforworldpeace.Nobel'sbequestforapeaceprizewaslargelyintributetoher,thoughhewassomewhatdoubtfuloftheeffectivenessofthepacifistmovement.Hediedin1896atSanRemo,leavingtheexecutorsofhiswilltoworkoutthedetailsofadministeringtheNobelprizes.
