Constructivejournalismisdifferentfrom“feel-goodnews,”likeafiremanrescuingacat.Instead,constructivejournalismoffersamorecompletebutappealingversionofthenews,saysMcIntyre.Inheropinion,besidesfocusingonsolutions,constructivejournalismincludesreportingonthehistoricalandsocialsettingofspecificnewsincidents,usingreliabledatatolookatlonger-termtrends,andavoidinginterviewtechniquesthatcreatedramawithoutincreasingunderstanding.

However,newspapersthriveoneyesonthepage,andeditorsmaybelessinterestedinconstructivejournalismiftheyaren’tconvincedthatit’llattracttheirreaders.WhileMcIntyreacknowledgesthoseconcerns,researchhasshowntheoppositetobetrue.Forexample, onestudy foundparticipantswhoreadanonlinestorythatfocusedonapproachestopovertyspentmoretimeonthepagethanthosereadingasimilarstorywithoutfocusingonsolutions.
