Newstudyshowsthatwhenteachersparticipateinatrainingprogramfocusedonprosocial（亲社会的）classroombehavior,theirstudentsarebetterabletocontroltheiremotions,andthatchildrenwhocanregulateemotionsaremorelikelytobeacademicallysuccessful.

Theprogramusesvideosandtrainingsessions,alongwithrole-playingandcoaching,tohelpteacherslearnmanagementskillssuchasusingbehavior-specificpraise,buildingpositiverelationshipswithstudents,andconsideringhowtoreducepoorbehavior.Teachersinthetraininggroupincreasedinteractionswithstudentsby64percentcomparedwith53percentforteachersinthecontrolgroupwithoutthetraining.
“Emotionalregulationistheabilitytorecognizewhatbehaviorisappropriateinthepresentsituation,”saysWendyReinke,professorintheCollegeofEducationattheUniversityofMissouri.“Forexample,astudentmighthavedifficultycontrollingthefeelingofangerifheorshebecomesannoyedwithanotherstudent.Butunderthisprogram,theteacherencouragesthemtomovetoadifferentspotintheclassroom,effectivelyteachingthemthatsometimessteppingawayandtakingabreakisagoodwaytocalmdownandmanage8ha8feeling.”
Afteroneschoolyearofusingtheprograminclassrooms,studentsimprovedtheirsocialabilityandabilitytoregulatetheiremotions.TheseimprovementsresultedinanincreaseinthetestsforstudentsinIncredibleYearsclassroomsvs.studentsincontrolclassrooms.Andthisclassroommanagementapproachcanhelpreducetheriskforstrugglinglearnersearlyon,whichcouldhelppreventmoreaccumulativesupportneedsinachild’sfuture.
