Theprogramusesvideosandtrainingsessions,alongwithrole-playingandcoaching,tohelpteacherslearnmanagementskillssuchasusingbehavior-specificpraise,buildingpositiverelationshipswithstudents,andconsideringhowtoreducepoorbehavior.Teachersinthetraininggroupincreasedinteractionswithstudentsby64percentcomparedwith53percentforteachersinthecontrolgroupwithoutthetraining.
“Emotionalregulationistheabilitytorecognizewhatbehaviorisappropriateinthepresentsituation,”saysWendyReinke,professorintheCollegeofEducationattheUniversityofMissouri.“Forexample,astudentmighthavedifficultycontrollingthefeelingofangerifheorshebecomesannoyedwithanotherstudent.Butunderthisprogram,theteacherencouragesthemtomovetoadifferentspotintheclassroom,effectivelyteachingthemthatsometimessteppingawayandtakingabreakisagoodwaytocalmdownandmanage8ha8feeling.”
