“That’sactuallynotthecase,theyremainquitedifferentfromlocals,”hesays.Forinstance,themigrantsstayedincontactwithmultiplepeoplewhosharedtheirplaceofbirth.
Theyalsospentmoretimeinthecenterofthecity.However,migrantsdidbecomemorelikelocalsinsomeways–suchasaveragecalllengthandthedistancetheytraveled.Thesettledmigrantsandlocalsgroupswerealsomorelikelythannewcomerstoreceivecallsbackfrompeopletheycontacted.
“Therealvalueinthisworkisinthepotentialoftellingustherateofchangeinhowacommunitycombinesovertime,”saidRexDouglassattheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego,US.
“Cellphonedataprovideanopportunitytoshowhowthesetiesgrowordisappearovertimeinawaythattypeofpeopleorsurveydatahaveahardtimeshowing.”
Suchmobilephonedatasetshavebeenusedinothersituations–forexampletomodelthepotentialspreadoftheEbolasicknessinWestAfrica.
However,theuseofmasstelecomsmetadataiscontroversial,becauseitisquitesimpletotieaperson’sidentitytoarandomprivatetelephonenumber.Groupsthatfightfortherightsofpeoplehavelongworriedthatdespitenotincludingnamesorthecontentofcalls,suchdatacanshowprivatethingsaboutpeople’slives.
