mylegandlookedatitunderamicroscope.Evenafterallthat,noone

couldgivemydiseaseanameanditisdifficulttoknowwhatthefuture

holds.

notmakemeannoyed,andIjustignorethem.AllinallIhaveagoodlife.

IamhappytohavefoundmanythingsIcando,likewritingandcomputer

programming.Myambitionistoworkforafirmthatdevelopscomputer

softwarewhenIgrowup.LastyearIinventedacomputerfootballgame

andabigcompanyhasdecidedtobuyfromme.Ihaveaverybusylife

withnotimetositaroundfeelingsorryformyself.Aswellasgoingto

moviesandfootballmatcheswithmyfriends,Ispendalotoftimewithmy

pets.Ihavetworabbits,aparrot,atankfulloffishandatortoise.Tolook

aftermypetsproperlytakesalotoftimebutIfinditworthwhile.Ialso

havetodoalotofwork,especiallyifIhavebeenawayforawhile.

Inmanywaysmydisabilityhashelpedmegrowstronger

psychologicallyandbecomemoreindependent.Ihavetoworkhardto

liveanormallifebutithasbeenworthit.IfIhadachancetosayone

thingtohealthychildren,itwouldbethis:

LarryBelmontworkedforacompanythatmaderobots.Recentlyit

hadbegunexperimentingwithahouseholdrobot.Itwasgoingtobe

testedoutbyLarry'swife,Claire.

Clairedidn'twanttherobotinherhouse,especiallyasherhusband

wouldbeabsentforthreeweeks,butLarrypersuadeherorallowherto

beharmed.Itwouldbeabonus.However,whenshefirstsawtherobot,

shefeltalarmed.HisnamewasTonyandheseemedmorelikeahuman

thanamachine.Hewastallandhandsomewithsmoothhairandadeep

voicealthoughhisfacialexpressionneverchanged.

OnthesecondmorningTony,wearinganapron,broughther

breakfastandthenaskedherwhethersheneededhelpdressing.Shefelt

embarrassedandquicklytoldhimtogo.Itwasdisturbingandfrightening

thathelookedsohuman.

Oneday,Clairementionedthatshedidn'tthinkshewasclever.Tony

saidthatshemustfeelveryunhappytosaythat.Clairethoughtitwas

ridiculoustobeofferedsympathybyarobot.Butshebegantotrusthim.

Shetoldhimhowshewasoverweightandthismadeherfeelunhappy.

Alsoshefeltherhomewasn'telegantenoughforsomeonelikeLarrywho

wantedtoimprovehissocialposition.Shewasn'tlikeGladysClaffern,

oneoftherichestandmostpowerfulwomenaround.

AsafavorTonypromisedtohelpClairemakeherselfsmarterandher

homemoreelegant.SoClaiseborrowedapileofbooksfromthelibrary

forhimtoread,orrather,scan.Shelookedathisfingerswithwonderas

theyturnedeachpageandsuddenlyreachedforhishand.Shewas

amazedbyhisfingernailsandthesoftnessandwarmthofhisskin.How

absurd,shethought.Hewasjustamachine.

TonygaveClaireanewhaircutandchangedthemakeupshewore.

Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompanyhertotheshops,hewroteoutalist

ofitemsforher.Clairewentintothecityandboughtcurtains,cushions,a

carpetandbedding.Thenshewentintoajewelershoptobuyanecklace.

Whentheclerkatthecounterwasrudetoher,sherangTonyupandtold

theclerktospeaktohim.Theclerkimmediatelychangedhisattitude.

ClairethankedTony,tellinghimthathewasa“dear”.Assheturned

around,therestoodGladysClaffern.Howawfultobediscoveredbyher,

Clairethought.Bytheamusedandsurprisedlookonherface,Claire

knewthatGladysthoughtshewashavinganaffair.Afterall,sheknew

Claire'shusbandnamewasLarry,notTony.

WhenClairegothome,sheweptwithangerinherarmchair.Gladys

waseverythingClairewantedtobe.“Youcanbelikeher”,Tonytoldher

andsuggestedthatsheinviteGladysandherfriendstothehousethe

nightbeforehewastoleaveandLarrywastoreturn.Bythattime,Tony

expectedthehousetobecompletelytransformed.

Tonyworkedsteadilyontheimprovements.Clairetriedtohelponce

butwastooclumsy.ShefelloffaladderandeventhoughTonywasinthe

nextroom,hemanagedtocatchherintime.Heheldherfirmlyinhis

armsandshefeltthewarmthofhisbody.Shescreamed,pushedhim

awayandrantoherroomfortherestoftheday.

Thenightofthepartyarrived.Theclockstruckeight.Theguests

wouldbearrivingsoonandClairetoldTonytogointoanotherroom.At

thatmoment,Tonyfoldedhisarmsaroundher,bendinghisfacecloseto

hers.Shecriedout“Tony”andthenheardhimdeclarethathedidn'twant

toleaveherthenextdayandthathefeltmorethanjustthedesireto

pleaseher.Thenthefrontdoorbellrang.Tonyfreedheranddisappeared

fromsight.ItwasthenthatClairerealizedthatTonyhadopenedthe

curtainsofthefrontwindow.Herguestshadseeneverything!

ThewomenwereimpressedbyClaire,thehouseandthedelicious

cuisine.Justbeforetheyleft,ClaireheardGladyswhisperingtoanother

womanthatshehadneverseenanyonesohandsomeasTony.Whata

sweetvictorytobeenviedbythosewomen!

Shemightnotbeasbeautiful

asthem,butnoneofthemhadsuchahandsomelover.

Thensheremembered-Tonywasjustamachine.Sheshouted

“Leavemealone”andrantoherbed.Shecriedallnight.Thenext

morningacardroveupandtookTonyaway.

ThecompanywasverypleasedwiththereportofTonyonhisthree

weekswithClaire.Tonyhadprotectedahumanbeingfromharm.Hehad

preventedClairefromharmingherselfthroughherownsenseoffailure.

Hehadopenedthecurtainsthatnightsothattheotherwomenwouldsee

himandClaire,knowingthattherewasnorisktoClaire'smarriage.But

eventhoughTonyhadbeensoclever,hewouldhavetoberebuilt-you

cannothavewomenfallinginlovewithmachines.

Unit3Underthesea

Iwas16whenIbeganworkinJune1902atthewhalingstation.Ihad

heardofthekillersthateveryyearhelpedwhalerscatchhugewhales.I

thought,atthetime,thatthiswasjustastorybutthenIwitnesseditwith

myowneyesmanytimes.

OntheafternoonIarrivedatthestation,asIwassortingoutmy

accommodation,Iheardaloudnoisecomingfromthebay.Werandown

totheshoreintimetoseeanenormousanimaloppositeusthrowingitself

outofthewaterandthencrashingdownagain.Itwasblackandwhite

andfish-shaped.

Withoutpausingwejumpedintotheboatwiththeotherwhalersand

headedoutintothebay.IlookeddownintothewaterandcouldseeOld

Tomswimmingbytheboat,showingustheway.Afewminuteslater,

therewasnoTom,soGeorgestartedbeatingthewaterwithhisoarand

therewasTom,circlingbacktotheboat,leadingustothehuntagain.

Usingatelescopewecouldseethatsomethingwashappening.As

wedrewcloser,Icouldseeawhalebeingattackedbyapackofaboutsix

otherkillers.Thekillersovertherearethrowingthemselvesontopofthe

whale'sblow-holetostopitbreathing.Andthoseothersarestoppingit

divingorfleeingouttosea.Georgetoldme,pointingtowardsthehunt.

Andjustatthatmoment,themostextraordinarythinghappened.The

killersstartedracingbetweenourboatandwhalejustlikeapackof

exciteddogs.AlthoughOldTomandotherkillerswerefiercehunters,they

neverharmedorattackedpeople.Infact,theyprotectedthem.Therewas

onedaywhenwewereoutinthebayduringahuntandJameswas

washedofftheboat.

Theseawasroughthatdayanditwasdifficulttohandletheboat.

ThewaveswerecarryingJamesfurtherandfurtherawayfromus.From

James'sface,Icouldseehewasterrifiedofbeingabandonedbyus.

ThensuddenlyIsawashark.Ittookoverhalfanhourtogettheboat

backtoJames,andwhenweapproachedhim,IsawJamesbeingfirmly

heldupinthewaterby
